EDWIN JAMES SIMMONS, OF EUGENE, OREGON.
PLUMB-LEVEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 558,219,-dated April 14, 1896.
Application filed September 30, 1895 Serial No. 564,192. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN JAMES. SIM- MONS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eugene, in the county of Lane and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Plumb-Level, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in plumb-levels; and the object in view is to simplify and improve the construction of devices of this nature with a View to providing one in which access may be easily obtained to the working parts and in which the latter are so constructed and arranged that they will not be liable to injury and breakage in the ordinary handling and use of the device.
To this end the invention consists in certain novel features and details of construction and arrangement of parts whereby ad vantages in point of simplicity and durability are attained, as hereinafter fully dedescribed, illustrated in the drawings, and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved plumblevel, the same being constructed in accordance with this invention, one of the coveringslides being removed to show the interior construction. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the pivoted weight.
Similarnumerals of reference designatecorresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates the stock of the plumb-level, which is preferably made of wood and in the usual elongated form and provided in one of itslongitudinal edges with a spirit-level 2, mortised therein, and of any ordinary construction. Upon each side of the center of the stock 1 and adjacent to the ends thereof said stock is formed with dovetailed mortises 3, of convenient depth, the opposite edges of said mortises: being reversely inclined or tapered to receive a dovetailed slide or cover 4. This slide or cover has its opposite edges made convergent, so that when introduced into the mortise 3 it will fit snugly therein, and such W'ithin the plane of each cover or slide 4.
a mortise (3 is formed of sufficient dimensions to receive and accommodate the vibrations of a weight or plun1b-b0b 7. weight or plumb-bob is preferably made in the form of a disk and of any desired metal for imparting the desired weight thereto, and is provided with an upwardly-extending U- shaped strap 8, which may be either formed integrally with the weight 7 or be formed separately and secured thereto in any approved manner. This strap is provided in its opposite parallel sides with transverselyalining perforations, which receive the oppositely-extending ends of a transverse pivot 9, secured within ahanger-bar 10, extending transversely of the stock 1, and having its opposite ends arranged within opposing notches 11 in the stock. The U shaped strap 8 extends upwardly over the top edge of the hanger-bar 10, thus embracing said bar and receiving the projecting ends of the pivot 9, as shown.
Pins orstops 12 are arranged upon opposite sides of the front portion of the U-shaped strap 8, which serves to limit the lateral vibration of the weight 7, the latter being further limited in its movements by contacting with the side walls of the mortise in which it is arranged. The weight or bob 7 is further provided with a depending pointed indicatorfinger 13, which, in conjunction with a station ary finger or pointer 14:, serves to visually indicate whether the surface to which the stock 1 is applied is plumb or otherwise.
The relative positions of the movable and fixed pointers or fingers may readily be observed through glass-covered apertures 15 in the stock 1 and slide-cover 4, said apertures being in transverse alinement with each other and with the extremities of said fingers or pointed indicators. 1
The improved plumb-level above described is very simple and inexpensive in construction, may be made in various sizes to suit the requirements of the user, is not subject to breakage, and by means of the particular arrangement of dovetailed slides access may be readily obtained to the working parts for the purpose of cleaning and adjusting the same whenever necessary.
Changes in the form, proportion, and minor This details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is 1. In a plumb-level, the combination with the stock, of a plumb-bob or weight arranged within a mortise in said stock, an upwardlyextending U -shaped fulcruming-strap on said bob or Weight, a transversely-disposed hangerbar carrying the fulcrum-pin upon which the same is hung, a depending finger or pointer 011 said Weight, and a stationary finger or pointer arranged Within the stock substantially as specified.
2. In a plumb-level, the combination with the stock, of a plumb-bob or weight arranged within a mortisein said stock, an upwardlyextending U -shaped fulcrulnin g-strap on said bob or Weight, a transversely-disposed hangerbar carrying the fulcrum-pin upon which the same is hung, pins or stops for limiting the vibration of said Weight, a depending finger or pointer on said weight, and a stationary finger or pointer arranged within the stock, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
EDVIN JAMES SIMMONS.
