' E. ZIMTBAUM; EXTENSION TABLE.
No. 557,933. Patented Apr. 7, 1896;
WITNESSES 7 ATTORNEYS ANDREW E GRAHAM.PHOTOiWNuWASMINGTON DC l ATENT OFFICE.
EMERIOII ZIMTBAUM, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
EXTENSION-TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 557,933, dated April 7, 1896.
Application filed October 24, 1895.
Serial No. 566,766. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMERICH ZIMTBAUM, a citizen of Austria-Hungary, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Extension-Tables, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an extension-table which is of simple construction and which will be firm in its construction and movements; and the invention resides in the novel features of construction set forth in the following specification and claim and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which Figure l is a sectional side elevation of a table closed or contracted. Fig. 2 is a section along 00 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view like Fig.
i 1, the table being opened or extended. Fig.
4 is a view like Fig. 2, the table beingopened or extended. Fig. 5 is a detail view of part of a leg and a part of one of the side extensions and table-leaf. Fig. 6 shows a leg-supporting finger.
In this table the main frame is shown comprising a top 1, a bottom 2, and sides 3. Said main frame has legs or supports 4. The main frame is provided with one or more extensions or slides, two being shown in the drawings. Each extension is shown comprising side pieces 5 and an end piece 6. Each side piece 5 is shown consisting of an unbroken strip or piece of material fitted to slide snugly or firmly between said top 1 and bottom 2, so that the side pieces will travel without shaking, and the extensions, when drawn out, will firmly support any object or objects placed thereon.
The side pieces 5 of opposite extensions are placed oppositely to and out of alinement with one another, so that when the table is closed the side pieces 5 of the respective extensions slide past or come to rest alongside one another.
The side pieces 3 have contractions 7, and the side pieces 5 which are closer together are guided or slide along the contractions 7 while the side pieces 5 which are wider apart are guided along the sides 3. The side pieces 5 thus are guided by the top 1 and bottom 2 and also by the sides 3 or contractions '7, so
that said side pieces are always firmly and accurately guided and held.
The slides or extensions 5 6 have each a support or legs 8 and 8, jointed or pivoted at 9 to the free or outer portion of such extension, and when said supports are in active position or swung down the bolts or fastenings 10 are shot or pushed outward into engagement with the side pieces 5, so as to hold the legs 8 and 8 from closing or collapsing. When the legs 8 are closed or folded up, the rests or fingers 11, jointed at 12 to apair of the side pieces 5, are swung to horizontal or holding position to keep said legs 8 elevated, so that in closing the table said legs 8 will be elevated above'the legs 8 and slide over the end of the latter, and the legs 8 will rest on the bottom 2, as seen in Fig. 1.
Connected to the top 1 and bottom 2 are hangers or braces 13, placed within the edges or limits-of the top and bottom. When closing the extensions 5 6, the extensionsides 5 slide along outside the braces 13, between said braces and the sides 3. Before closing the table the leaves 14 are folded up and are housed or slid into place between the top 1 and bottom 2 and between the hangers 13, said hangers 13 keeping the leaves from moving sidewise against the sides 3 or against the legs 8 and 8. Each leaf is practically formed of two sections jointed together at 15, and
when spread the leaf-sections can be placed on the extended slides 5 6.
Into a sunk portion or recess 16 of each side piece 5 is pivoted or connected at 17 a hook or catch 18, engaging into an eye or holding portion 19 in a leaf 14, so as to hold the latter in place.
- The handles 20 serve to draw out the extensions, and' by giving the appearance of drawers they heighten the effect of the structure.
Guides 21 can be provided for the travel of the side pieces 5, whose motion can be eased by antifriction-rollers 22.
The finger 11 can be held or made to rest horizontally or in supporting position by various means. For example, the friction of the finger on its pivot 12 might be such as to keep the finger in supporting position, as said finger does not have to carry much weight; or,
as seen in Fig. 6, a spring made to bear against the finger, somewhat in the manner of a jackknife spring, will serve to keep said finger in position.
What I claim as new, and desire by Letters Patent, is
An extension-table, comprising a main frame having a fixed top and bottom, vertical hangers arranged at each end and on opposite sides of the main frame and connected at the top and bottom, extension-slides comprising side pieces having parallel and unbroken top and bottom edges fitted to slide snugly between said top and bottom and between the hangers and the sides of the main frame, each extension-slide having legs jointed to its free or outer portion, rests hinged to the side pieces of one of the extension-slides and adapted to be folded to and held in a horizontal position to support the legs of said extension-slide in their raised position, and to be folded down to secure to permit said legs to assume an operative position, leaves for the extension-slides adapted to be housed between said hangers and provided on their under sides with eyes, said extension-slides being recessed and provided with hooks pivoted in said recesses and adapted to detachably engage the eyes on the leaves when the latter are placed on the extensionslides, said leaves being otherwise detached from the extension-slides so as to be free therefrom on disengaging the hooks, for e11- abling the leaves to be bodily removed from the extension-slides and housed between the hangers, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
