This invention relates to an improvement in cork-extractors, and particularly to that class which consists of two spring-prongs adapted to be inserted into the neck of a bottle on opposite sides of the cork, and whereby the cork may be turned in the neck and readily extracted therefrom.
The object of the invention is to construct an extractor of this class which maybe folded so as to be safely carried in the pocket, and which also, when folded, requires less space for packing, an important consideration in the manufacture of articles of this character; and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
The handle A consists of a strip of metal bent to form projecting arms a a and legs I) 1). Between the legs and at their outer ends the extractor B is secured by a pin 0, which extends through the two legs and the extractor and is upset upon the outside of the legs I). The extractor B consists of a piece of sheet metal bent into U shape, the outer ends of the legs being tapered to substantially sharpened points and the edges of the legs slightly sharpened. On each leg and at a point just beyond the pivot-holes wings d d are formed, which are turned outward, so as to overlap the legs I), as shown in Fig. 4, so that when the extractor is in the open position, as seen in Fig. 1, the wings overlap the points of the legs and securely hold the extractor in the open position, or when the extractor is folded and the points project into the handle, as seen in Fig. 2, the wings project over the legs inside the pivot, and thereby hold the extractor in its closed position.
The metal from which the extractor is formed is steel, and yields sufficiently to allow the prongs to be turned upon the pivot and hold them against the legs of the handle in either the open or closed position.
Extractors constructed as above described are readily formed and easily assembled and may be produced at a verylow cost for manufacture.
It will be understood that cork-extractors consisting of two spring-arms are old, and I am aware that folding cork-extractors, broadly considered, are not new, and therefore do not wish to be understood as claiming such as my invention.
In a cork-extractor, the combination with a handle constructed with two legs, of a springextractor consisting of a strip of sheet metal bent into U shape with two outwardly-extending wings on each side, said extractor secured between the legs of the handle, and so that the said wings will extend over the edges of said legs, substantially as described.
