P. J. JOEGKEN. WASHBOARD.
No. 556,541. Patented Mar. 17, 1896.
'NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER J. JOEGKEN, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN IVASIIBOARD COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
WASHBOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,541, dated March 17, 1896.
Application filed February 26, 1895. Serial No. 539,737. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern: bear upon the protector when turned down Be it known that 1, PETER J. J OECKEN, a and prevent its being turned up, and can be citizen of the United States, residing at Olevepressed inwardly, so as to allow the protector land, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of to be folded up against the brand-board for Ohio, have inventedordiscovered certain new transportation and storage. The protector and useful Improvements in Washboards, of is prevented from turning down sufficiently which improvements the following is a speci-' far to allow the escape of the soap from the fication. receptacle by the bearing of the rear end of The invention described herein relates to the protector against the brand-board, the

In the accompanying drawings, forming a In the construction shown in Fig. 4, showpart of this specification, Figure 1 is a view ing the application of my improvement to a in side elevation of a washboard having my double-faced washboard, two independentlyimprovement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a movable protectors 9 and 10 are employed.
25 sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a These protectors are provided with trunnions view similar to Fig. 2, showing a modification fitting within suitable sockets in the side bars, in the lock for the protector. Figs. 4 and 5 and are so arranged in relation to each other are sectional elevations showing the applicathat their rear edges will bear one against the tion of the improvement to double -faced other when one of the protectors, as 9, is ad- 30 washboards. Fig. 6 is a View similar to Fig. justed to position for protector use, and the 4, showing the protectors provided with side other protector, 10, is folded up against the pieces, and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of brand-board, so that the folded protector 10 the folding protectors, showing the construcwill serve as a stop to prevent the protector 9 tion of the trunnions at the ends thereof. from dropping down beyond operative posi- 3 5 The washboard is formed as usual, consisttion. This construction will permit of both ing of the head-piece 1, cross-bar 2, side bars protectors being folded up against the brand- 3, rubbing-face 4, and brand-board 5. The board, one on each side thereof, but when one protector 6 is provided at its inner corners of the protectors is shifted to operative posiwith trunnions adapted to fit in suitable tion the other protector cannot be shifted to 40 sockets formed in the side bars and located corresponding position on its side of the washat such a distance from the head-piece as board without at the same time causing the will permit of the protector being folded up first protector to turn up against the brandagainst the brand-board and when adjusted board. to position for protector use will form, in The construction shown in Fig. 5 is a modi- 45 connection with the brand-board, a soap box fication of Fig. 4 and one in which one of the 9 5 or receptacle. The protector is held in opprotectors will serve as a brand-board while erative position to form the soap-box and the other is in position for protector use. to permit the soap to drop out, and the protector which is in operative position will prevent, by reason of its rear edge bearing against the lower edge of the folded protector below its pivotal point, the latter from being turned down to operative position until the first protector has been folded up. In this construction, wherein one protector operates as a brand-board, a stop 11 is attached to the under side of the head-piece to prevent the protectors when being folded up from passing entirely through the brand-board space.
If desired, the protectors may be formed with V-shaped end pieces 12, so as to entirely inclose the soap, as shown in Fig. 6, in which case the protectors will not fold fiat against the brand-board, but will move inwardly sufficiently to permit of the soap-receptacle be ing protected by another washboard when packed for transportation.
I claim herein as my invention- 1. The combination, with a washboard, of a protector pivotally mounted in side bars at such a distance below the head-piece as to form, in conjunction with the brand-board, a receptacle for the soap above the protector, and to be capable of being folded into the brand-board space, and astop formed by the brand-board for holding the protector above the rubbing-face in position for use, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a double-faced washboard, of two pivotally-mounted protectors arranged to form a receptacle for soap in connection with the brand-board, when shifted to position of use above the rubbingfaces, said protectors being arranged in such relation to each other that one protector will be held in operative position by the other PETER J. JOEUKEN.
