SASH-CURTAIN FIXTURE AND FASTENING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,505, dated March 1'7, 1896. Application filed July 25,1895. Serial No. 557,075. (No model.)

To all whom, t may concern:

Be it known that Il, DAVID KARGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of IVisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sash-Curtain Fixtures and Fastenin gs, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in sash-curtain fixtures and fastenings.

The object of my invention is, first, to provide fixtures capable of being used interchangeably on either side or on the front of the window-casing; second, to provide fasteners which will furnish a hinged support for the curtain-rod, so that when the latter is released from either end it may be swung in its horizontal position upon the other.

In the following description, reference is had to the accompanying drawings,in which- Figure l is a side view of the window-frame showing my fixtures as they are when used on the face of the window-casing near the top, and also as they are when located between the sides of the casingnear the meeting edges of the upper and lower sash. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail side view of one of my fasteners, showing how the curtain-rod is supported. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing a modified form of the fastener. Fig. 4 is a top view of the curtain-rod tip, showing the opening for the reception of the supporting-stem.

Reference -letters are used consistently throughout the several views.

My fastener is preferably formed integrally of a single piece of wire, the upper end of which is bent to form a screw or tack retaining loop A, and the lower end is doubled back upon itself and twisted at B, thus forming a lower tack-loop, C, the end being then bent outward and upward to form a vertical stem D, upon which the curtain-rod is supported, as hereinafter explained.

Between the twisted portion B and the upper loop, A, the wire is provided with an outward-projecting bend E, adapted to prevent the curtain rod from being accidentally thrown out of place. F is a curtain-rod provided at each end with a ball-shaped tip T, provided with an opening H therethrough, adapted to the reception of the stem D. The tip is preferably formed into a removable cap I, adapted to slide either into or on the body of the rod, but if desired the rod and tip can be formed integrally.

The object of the removable tip is to provide for cutting off the rod to fit windows of various sizes; but if it is desired to form the tips integrally the rod can be formed in telescoping sections J and J ,as shown in the lower half of Fig. l. It is thus made adjustable to windows of various sizes, or to both positions on the same window-casing.

In Fig. 3 I have formed the bend E in a lower position than that shown in Fig. 2, it being in the former case located in the horizontal plane of the rod, and the tip T is provided with a channel K, into which the bend E is adapted to project. It will be observed that in either case the rod may be removed at either end by pressing upward upon the tip, causing the stem D to spring outward and release the tip from engagement with the bend E. The spiral twist B supports the stem B with considerable rigidity, so that an accidental push on the rod is not likely to be sufficient to release it. It is also obvious that when either end of the rod is released, it is perinitted'to swin g outward horizontally upon the hinged support furnished by the stem D at the other end of the rod, thus permitting the window to be washed without removing the curtain, and that the fastenings are equally well adapted to every desired position on the window-casing.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. A fastening for curtain-fixtures, consisting of the combination of the loops A and C, the twisted portion B, and vertical stem D, all formed integrally from a single piece of wire, substantially as described.

2., A fastening for curtain-fixtures, consisting of the combination of the loops A and C, the twisted portion B, and vertical stem D, adapted to engage with, and support the end of the curtain-rod, and the outward-projecting bend E, adapted to hold the rod in engagement with the stem D, substantially as described.

3. A fastening for curtain-fixtures, consisting in the combination of a suitable bracket adapted to be secured to the window-casing,

bination with the `fastenings, adapted to be secured to the Windoweasing, and each provided with a vertically-disposed stem D and an outwardly-projecting bend or lug E, of the curtain-rod, and the removable tip therefor, provided with the channel K, into which the bend or lugE is adapted to fit, substantially as described.
