CARBON-HOLDER FOR TYPE-WRITING MACHINES.

Be it known that I, MARTIN J. SUNDERLIN, of Vat-kins, in the county of Schuyler, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Oarbon-IIolders for Type-WVriting Machines, of which the follow ing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact deseription.

This invention is designed for use by persons operating type-writing machines.

The purpose of the invention is to maintain in a neat, compact, and convenient manner one or more carbon-sheets so as to be ever ready for use in writing manifold copies and save to a great extent the time and labor heretofore required in arranging the carbon-sheets between the sheets to be written upon, also to obviate the liability of misplacin g the sheets of writing-paper in relation to the carbonsheet from which it is designed to receive the copy of the writing, and, furthermore,to effectually prevent the liability of the carbonsheets being placed with the wrong side to ward the sheet to be written.

To the attainment of these objects and other advantages hereinafter set forth, my invention consists essentially of a type-protecting back sheet provided across one end thereof with a flap, leaving the main portion of the sheet uncovered, the portion of the sheet under the flap being provided with a plurality of attaching devices for holding one or more carbon-sheets in position to be interposed between the blank sheets, as hereinafter more fully described and specifically set forth in the claims.

In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a carbon-holder embodying my invention and showing the same in condition for attaching the carbon-sheets thereto. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same with the upper end portion folded over to form the gage for the adjustment of the blank sheets to be introduced between the carbon-sheets. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the holder with portions broken away to show the arrangements of the plurality of carbon-sheets with interposed blank sheets, and Fig. 4 is an edge view of the same.

a represents the type-protecting back sheet which is usually interposed between the platen of the type-writing machine and the paper to be written on. One end of this sheet is provided with a series of suitable attaching devices (Z d for holding a plurality of carbonsheets e e neatly arranged one over the other and in proper positions to receive between them the blank sheets f f which are to receive the copies of the type-writing.

In order to facilitate the adjustment of the said blank sheets ff in the holder so as to insure perfect copying of the type-writing, I provide the back sheet a with a suitable gage g for the abutment of the top edges of the blank sheets f f introduced between the carbonsheets 6 e. This gage I preferably form by folding the upper end portion of the back sheet a upon itself along the line b which is at right angles to the side edges of the sheet, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings. Said folded portion forms a flap a, which leaves the main portion of the sheet uncovered.

By inserting the blank sheets f j" under the flap a of the sheet a and pushing said blank sheets upto the line of folding they become gaged endwise, so as to cause them all to lie with their end edges evenly and in proper position longitudinally in relation to the carbonsheets, and thus insure the copying of the last written line uniformly on all the sheets interposed between the carbon-sheets.

The attaching devices cl (Z, I prefer to form by cutting in the sheet a adjacent to the aforesaid line b a series of longitudinal parallel slits c 0 arranged in pairs, meeting at the ends farthest from the line b and forming fingers dd, to the free ends of which I apply suitable dry gum or adhesive substance, which, when moistened, will adhere to the carbon-sheet. By providing a series of such fingers,as shown, a plurality of carbon-sheets can be placed successively one upon the other and each fastened to one or more of the fingers (Z. Said carbon-sheets are intended to be retained in said attachment until they are worn out, when they are readily detached from the fingers and new sheets attached to said fingers.

The numerous advantages derived from my described carbon-holder will be readily appreciated by persons using the same, inasmuch as the blank sheets ffare readily introduced and adjusted between the carbonsheets to insure perfect copies 011 all the introduced sheets, and when the writing is completed the sheets containing the copies of the Writing are readily removed from the holder by simply taking hold of the sheet a at the fold Z) and slightly shaking the holder so as to cause the sheets ff to drop out of theholder, which sheets fall in an assembled condition upon the table or desk. Hence it saves the time and labor heretofore required in remov in g the said sheets on e at a time from between the carbon-sheets. Besides this the carbonsheets remain neatly and compactly arranged in the holder, and therefore they are preserved in proper condition and always ready for use.

hat I claim as my invention is 1. A holder for carbon-sheets for manifold type-writing formed of a sheet of paper constituting the type-protecting back sheet and provided at one end with a flap leaving the main portion of the sheet uncovered, and the portion of the sheet under the flap provided with a plurality of fingers which are gummed for attaching carbon-sheets thereto as set forth.

2. As a new article of manufacture a holder for carbon-sheets for manifold type-writing, which holder consists of the back sheet a folded at one end upon itself along the line b and having in the main portion adjacent to said line of folding the series of slits c 0 arranged inpairs meeting at one end and forming the lingers d d gummed at their free ends for the attachment of the carbon sheets thereto substantially as described and shown.
