PARK BENJAMIN HARVEY AND OASSIUS FREDERICK HARRIS, OF NEIV LONDON, CONNECTICUT.
CURTAIN-POLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 555,603, dated March 3, 1896. Application filed October 25, 1895. SerialNo. 566,904. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, PARKBENJAMIN HAR- VEY and (JAssIUs FREDERICK HARRIS, citi- Zens of the United States, and residents of New London, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ourtain-Poles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to suspension devices for use in connection with curtain-poles and for other and similar purposes, and when used in connection with curtain-poles the object thereof is to provide means for suspending a curtain, portiere or other article therefrom, and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the fol lowing specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 represents a transverse section of a curtain-pole provided with our improved suspending device; Fig. 2, a side view of a portion of said device; Fig. 3, a side view of the remaining portion thereof; and Fig. 4 is a perspective View of a detail of the construction.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a tubular curtain-pole provided with a longitudinal slot or opening a in the bottom thereof, or in place of the curtainpole a cir cularly-formed supporting device for other articles or objects may be substituted.
Mounted within the pole A is a spherical body 13, having a deep annular groove or recess O formed therein, which divides the ball orbody into two equal parts, which are united by means of a central portion D, or the circular body or ball may be composed of two semicircular portions united by means of a rod or bolt, as will be readily understood.
Suspended from the central portion or rod D is a plate E, one end of which is preferably circular in form and provided with a bayonetslot F, which opens at one side thereof, as shown in Fig. 3, and the lower end of the plate E is contracted to form a shank G, which projects through the longitudinal slot or opening CL in the bottom of the pole, and at the eX- treme lower end of the shank G is formed a hook, as shown at g, and formed in the body portion thereof is a vertical slot 9, as shown in Fig. 3, through which passes a set-screw H, by means of which the jaw K is secured to the shank G, said set-screw passing through a hole in the upper end of said jaw and said jaw being held in place by a nut or bur L.
The lower end of the jaw Kis provided with inwardly-directed teeth or serrations M, and the operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
The plate E is connected with the central part or rod D by being slipped thereon, as will be readily understood, in which position said central part or rod D will occupy the upper annular portion f of the bayonet-slot, and the ball or body B is inserted into the end of the pole A, with the shank G of the plate E extending through the slot or open ing a. In this position the jaw K may be raised to the highest position 011 the shank G and secured thereto by means of the nut H, and when this is done the plate E cannot be removed from the ball or body B without removing the same from the pole or lowering the jaw K.
It will be understood that a curtain or other article may be clamped beneath the jaw K and the lower end of the shank G and will be held in position by the teeth or serrations M 011 said jaw, and when the device is used for suspending or supporting curtains, portieres, or similar articles a pole of any desired length may be employed, and any desired number of the suspending devices may be connected therewith, and when so connected said suspending devices will be free to slide or move back and forth from one end of said pole to the other, and it will thus be seen that when a curtain or portiere is thus suspended the same may be moved from one end of the pole.
to the other, as may be desired, or extended the full length thereof.
Our invention is not limited to the exact form, construction, and arrangement of parts shown and described, and we therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
Having fully described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patcnt In a curtain-suspending device the combination with a tubular pole having a longitudinal slot formed therein, of a spherical body having a deep annular groove or recess dividing the body into two equal parts which are united by a central portion or shank, a plate suspended from said shank and having a longitudinal SlOiJfOllllGd therein, said plate having an enlarged circular end in Which is formed a bayonet-slot, and a longitudinal slot formed near the center thereof, the extremity of the plate being bent into a hook, a jaw provided with inwardly-directed teeth and having an opening in the opposite side there of, a set-screw passing through the slot in the plate and an opening in said jaw to hold the same together, and a bur o1- nut upon the end of said screw whereby when the jaw is in a clamping position the jaw is parallel to the shank of the plate, and the sphericalbody will not become detached from the clamp substantially as described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our invention we have signed our names, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 3d day of October, 1895.

OASSIUS FREDERICK HARRIS.
