Description

(No Model.)
P. E. GARNER.
CAN OPENER. No. 555,315. Patented Feb. 25, 1896.
WITNESSES: f ya UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK E. GARNER, OF CORNXVALL, CONNECTICUT.
CAN-OPEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 555,315, dated February 25, 1896.
Application filed November 9, 1895. Serial No. 568,408. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, FRANK E. GARNER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cornwall, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can-Openers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to can-openers. The object thereof is to provide a simple and effective device of this class bymeans of which the entire head of the can can be cut out, or rather the end thereof containing the head out oif; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompan ying drawing forms a part, said drawing being a perspective view of my improved can opener.
In the practice of my invention I provide a can-opener comprising a pair of handles, as A and B, and each handle is provided with a shank, as C and D, said shanks being pivoted together at Gin the manner of a pair of shears, and beyond this pivotal connection said shanks are projected to form blades II and K. The blade K is preferably shorter than the other and is provided at its outer end or point with a curved segmental arm,which is adapted to rest upon or over the end or head of a can in the operation of the device and to serve as a guide for the can-opener in such operation.
The operation will. be readily understood from the foregoing description, when taken 0 My invention is not limited to the exact form of blades H and K, or to the form and location of the arm L, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations in the construction herein shown and described, and modifications thereof, as fairly come within the scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- A can-opener consisting of a pair of handles A and B, provided with a shank C and D, and being pivoted together, the projection of the shanks forming blades, one of which is shorter than the other, and is provided at the outer end thereof with a segmental arm L, formed at an angle to the blade with which it is connected and adapted to rest upon the head of the can, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 5th day of November, 1895.
FRANK E. GARNER.
