SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,947, dated February 18, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, MELVIN M. MULLINS, of Monticello, in the county of Lawrence and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plows, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to an improvement in plows; and the especial object of the invention is to construct a shovel-plow which may be used wherever a turning-plow is ordinarily employed, and to provide a shovel-plow with a detachable point so fitted to the wing of the plow that the two will be virtually integral, and, furthermore, to provide a means whereby the wing and point may be adjusted to or from the ground, so that as the point wears out it may be carried downward and held in its adjusted position, enabling a point to be used until it is practically worn away, at which time a new point may be substituted, the Wing and other portions of the plow being intact.

Another object of the invention is to provide for a guided adjustment of the handles connected with the plow-beam.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as Will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a plow-beam and a vertical section through the handles, the stock, and the share. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the plow in its entirety. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the share and the slide connecting the wing with the point, and Fig. 4 is a detail View of the aforesaid slide.

The plow-beam A may be of any approved construction, and the handles B are pivoted at their lower ends to the beam, the handles being connected by the ordinary cross bar or bars 10. Each handle has pivoted thereto a brace 11, the said braces, at their lower ends, being provided with longitudinal slots 12. The slotted portions of the braces engage with the sides of the beam, and bolts 13 are passed through these slots in the braces and into the beam, while a cap 14 is placed over the slotted portion of each brace, the bolts 13 being passed through the caps. guide the braces somewhat in their action, and likewise serve to prevent dirt or foreign matter entering the slots and interfering with the adjustment of the handles, which adjustment is accomplished by manipulating the bolts 13 so that the braces may be raised or lowered to proportionately elevate or depress the handles to suit the plowman, and in order that the braces may move together they are connected by a cross-bar 15, which in the lowest adjustment of the handles will rest upon the top of the beam.

The stock B may be of any approved construction; but preferably it comprises two members 16 and 16, bolted or otherwise attached to the beam at their upper ends and connected and spaced suitably at their lower ends, a brace 17 being attached to the stock and to the heel of the beam. Under this construction a longitudinal slot 17 is made in the stock; but this slot, which is essential, may be otherwise formedas, for example, the stock may be solid and the slot 17 a made in its lower end only.

The prime object of this invention relates to the plowshare O. This share practically consists of a wing 18 and a point 19, together with a slide or attaching plate 20. The attaching-plate 20 has two or more elongated slots 21 made therein, as shown in Fig. 4, and the upper end of the slide or foot-piece,as it may be termed, is bifurcated, as shown at 22 in Figs. 3 and 4.

The wing is attached to the foot-piece or slide by passing a bolt 23 through the lower portion of the wing and one of the slots 21 in the foot-piece, and the point, which at its upper end closely engages with the bottom of the wing, is held in this position by passing a bolt 24 preferably through its upper portion and a second elongated slot in the foot-piece.

The foot-piece is adjustably attached to the stock, and this is accomplished by passing a bolt 25 through the upper portion of the wing, the bifurcated portion of the slide or footpiece, and likewise through the slot in the bottom portion of the stock, a suitable locknut and washer 26 being placed upon the rear end of this adj Listing-bolt 25.

Under this construction it is obvious that a share is produced which will perform all the functions of a turning-plow, yet which will be a shovel-plow, and that the point may be replaced whenever it becomes worn to too great an extent, and by manipulating the adjusting-bo1t 25 the entire share may be car ried downward to bring the point in proper relation to the ground as the point becomes worn by constant use. The construction of the plow is therefore rendered exceedingly economic, and necessary repairs to the share may be made by any one of ordinary intelligence.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a plow, the combination wing, a point, a foot-piece connecting the point and wing and having a bifurcated portion, a slotted stock, and a bolt passing through the slot of the stock and securing the win g in place, substantially as described.

2. In a plow, the combination of a slotted stock, a wing, a bolt passing through the wing and through the slot of the stock, a point, and a foot-piece, the same being secured to the wing and point and having a longitudinallybifurcated portion embracing the bolt of the wing, substantially as described.

3. In a plow,the combination with the beam of a stock, the same having a longitudinal slot part of which receives the beam, a wing, a bolt passing through the wing and through the slot of the stock, a point for the Wing, a foot-piece, the same having a longitudinallybifurcated portion and elongated slots, and bolts passing through the slots and securing the foot-piece and Win g, substantially as described.
