STIRRING-PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 745,816, dated December 1, 1903. Application filed April 9,1903. Serial No. 151,858. (No model.)
1'0 all zultom it 'mcty concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN H. GIGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Independence, in the county of Montgomery and btate of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stirring-Flows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in stirring-plows adapted to be attached to plow-carrying means of any desired character; and its object is to provide a device of this character having a point of novel construction, from which extend detachable slats which form the moldboard of the device. These slats are supported at their upper ends upon sleeves which serve to space them from a supporting -strip connected to a stock which is fastened to the landside of the plow. Suitable bracing-arms are employed for holding the parts rigidly in position.
l/Viiih the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved stirring-plow. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2 Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the device, and Fig. 4 is a rear elevation.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a landside, having its forward end 2 beveled or tapered, and secured thereon is a plow-point 3, preferably formed of a sheet of metal and having its forward cutting edge tapered forward to the point 4, which is arranged, preferably, at a point between the center and the landside of the plow. A stock 5 is bolted or otherwise secured to the inner surface of the landside, and adjustably secured thereto is a longitudinal slotted extension 6, which projects rearwardly from a supporting-bar 7. bar is so shaped as to project downward to a point nearly in horizontal alinement with the free end of the point 3 and has a series of sleeves 8 secured upon the forward or upper face thereof by means of bolts 9. Each of This these bolts extends through the upper portion of a metal slat which is depressed at its lower end, as shown at 11, to receive the upper edge of the point 3, and said depressed portion is secured to the point in any suitable manner, as by means of bolts 12. The heads of these bolts are flush with the upper surface of the point 3, and said surface is also flush with the upper surfaces of the slats 10, connected thereto. These slats taper toward each other at the lower ends thereof and are curved longitudinally, as shown. As they are preferably formed of spring metal, the incline thereof can be readily regulated by adjusting the extension 6 upon stock 5. This extension is adapted to be secured in adjusted position by means of a bolt 13, which projects through the stock and through the slot 14, formed within the extension. The free end of the supporting-bar 7 is supported rigidly in position by means of a brace 15, which is bolted or otherwise secured to the landside at a point near the rear end thereof, and it also fastens to the supporting-beam near its free end by means of one of the bolts 9, before referred to.
In order to prevent twisting of the plow when the point is brought into contact with the soil, a substantially horizontal brace-bar 16 is provided, the same being secured at one end to the inner surface of landside 1 and the other end thereof being fastened to the under surface of the point 3 near its free end by one of the bolts 12.
In operation it will be seen that the peculiar shape of the cutting edge of the point 3 will tend to guide the plow to the right, or, in other words, from the line in which the landside is arranged. The peculiar construction and arrangement of the parts permits the construction of an extremely light plow of this character without sacrificing the strength thereof, and the friction resulting from the contact of said plow with the earth is reduced to the minimum.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any secured to the point, sleeves interposed between the slats of the supporting-bar, bolts for securing the slats and sleeves to the bar, a brace-bar extending from the landside to the free end of the supporting-bar, and a brace-bar secured to the landside and connected to the free end of the point.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN H. GIGER.
