STATES nron.
OLIVER P. SANFORD, OF DADEVILLE, ALABAMA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JACOB HENRY, OF SAME PLACE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,877, dated July 20, 1875 application filed May 28, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, OLIVER P. SANFORD, of Dadeville, in the county of Tallapoosa and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plows, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved plow. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same, the beam being shown in section through the line 00 av, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail cross-section of the standard, taken through the line 3 3 Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a front View of a modified form of the same, the beam being shown in section through the line a: a, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved plow, simple in construction, convenient in use, effective in operation, and easily adjusted, as may be required.
The invention consists in the combination of the beam, having its rear end curved downward, the U-shaped adjustable standard, and the adjustable handles, with each other, and in the combination of the washer, provided with a tongue and cross-head, with the notched U- shaped standard, the plow-plate, and its bolt, as hereinafter fully described.
A is the plow-beam, the rear end of which is curved downward. B is the plow-standard, which is made of a bar of iron bent into U shape, the parallel arms of the bar being at such a distance apart as to receive the rear end of the beam A between them. The rear end of the plowbeam A is secured to the standard B at a little distance above its bend by a bolt, b The upper ends of the arms of the standard B may be curved forward to correspond with the curve of the beam A, and secured to said beam by a bolt, b Several holes are formed in the beam A and in the standard B to receive the bolt b", so that the pitch of the plow may be adjusted as desired. 0 are the handles, the forward ends of which are secured to the beam A by a bolt, 0 Several holes are formed in the beam A to receive the bolt 0 so that the handles may be readily adjusted as required. The handles 0 are connected and held at the proper distance apart by a round or long bolt, 0 to the ends of which are attached the upper ends of 'the braces D, the lower ends of which are secured to the beam A and standard B by the bolt N. If desired, the arms of the standard B, instead of being curved forward along the beam A, may extend upward to the handles 0, and may be secured to the ends of the bolt 0 so as to take the place of the braces D. E is the plow'plate, which rests upon the forward side of the lower part of the standard B, and is secured in place by a bolt, F, that passes through the said plow-plate, and through the space between the arms of the standard B, below the rear end of the beam A, so that the said plow-plate may be raised and lowered by loosening the nut of the said bolt F. The bolt F also passes through a washer, G, placed upon the rear side of the standard B. The lower edge of the washer G is bent inward, to enter one or the other of a number of notches formed in the rear side of the said standardv B, to prevent the plow E from slipping downward. Upon the upper edge of the washer G is formed a tongue, which is bent forward, passes through the space in the standard B, through which the bolt F passes, and has a cross-head, g, formed upon its forward end,
' which cross-head rests upon the forward side of the said standard B, and against which the upper edge of the plow-plate E rests, to keep the said plow-plate from turning upon its bolt.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of the beam A, having its rear end curved downward, the U-shaped adjustable standard B, and the adjustable handles 0, with each other, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination of the washer G, provided with a tongue and cross head, g, with the notched U-shaped standard B, the plowplate E, and its bolt F, substantially as herein shown and described.
OLIVER P. SANFORD.
