SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,600, dated February 11, 1896. Application filed November 14, 1895. serial No 568,959. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GUSTAV HIRsoHBERG, a citizen of the United States,residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Caps, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a soft cap suitable for such pursuits as bicycling or other outdoor occupations, which, while affording protection, will at the same time secure thorough ventilation; and the invention resides in the novel features of construction set forth in the following specification and claim and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which Figure l is a sectional side view of the cap. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the cap.

The cap is made of cloth or like soft material in two sections 1 and 2, a ventilatingstrip 3 of wire-cloth or net-like material being interposed between the cap-sections 1 and 2. This ventilating-strip extends entirely about the cap, so as to join the two sections 1 and 2 and to secure a thorough ventilation or cooling about the head of the wearer. This ventilating-strip is placed in contiguity to the sweat-band 4, but is free from or not covered by the sweat-band, so that the ventilating elfect of strip 3 is not hindered. By extending this strip 3 about the lower part of the cap the back of the head, as also the forehead, will be effectively cooled or ventilated, the cap-section 1 at the same time protecting the wearer against the sun..

By having the net-like fabric or ventilatingstrip 3 of material having a certain rigidity or body, such as wire-cloth, said ventilatingstrip will aid in keeping a soft or flexible cap in its proper shape, and will also aid in keeping the cap-sections apart for proper ventilation, and the sweat-leather inside, as already noticed, is made to terminate so as not to obstruct the ventilation through said ventilating-strip.

At the visor 5 the sweat-band is shown held in somewhat free or ventilating position by a serrated or channeled inlay 6; but this feature is not essential to my invention.

The top of the cap is shown with a ventilator 7 of wire-cloth or the like, the binding 8 about the ventilator 7 being stitched or secured to the edge of the opening in the capsection 1.

The wire-cloth or strip 3 can be cut with its fibers straight or on the bias, as desired.

An acceptable way of put-ting the device on the market is to have the cap unlined and to have one or more of the seams taped with a strip or strips of such material, for example, as celluloid, which aids in keeping the cap in shape.

WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

As an article of manufacture, the cap herein described, consisting of a flexible, collap sible crown-section 1, a base-section 2, a wiregauze intermediate section 3 secured at its lower edge to the base'section and joined at its upper edge to and serving to sustain and maintain the form of the flexible, collapsible crown-section, and a sweat-band arranged inside the base-section and of a height or width less than the height or width of the intermediate wire-gauze section, to permit the flow of air through the wire-gauze section directly upon the head of the wearer, said wire-gauze section being uncovered externally and internally, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
