SCRAPING-BRUSH FOR CLEANSING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,339, dated February 1 1, 1896. Application filed June 28, 1895, Serial No. 554,305. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, THEODOR FINNE, a subject of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, and a resident of W'ittenberge, in the Prov-. ince of Brandenburg, Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scratching or Scraping Brushes for Cleansing and other Purposes, of which the following is an exact specification.

This invention relates to scratching or scraping brushes in which the stock or body proper is covered with a piece of stuff furnished with rows of parallel pieces or pins of wire arranged vertically or nearly vertically to their base or to the said piece of stuff respectively. The latter is generally formed by so-called card-sheet, the pieces of wire of which are bent angularly like those of a carding-engine, and I will in the present specification use the term card-sheet for said cover of the brush, although I do not confine myself to applying my invention only to brushes with card-sheet proper.

My invention resides in making the cardsheet exchangeable, or, in other words, in constructing the brush in such a manner that said card-sheet may, if desired or necessary, be easily taken off and replaced by another one. I attain said object by composing the body proper of the brush of two or more parts, which are hinged or otherwise movably connected one to the other, and by providing the cardsheet with apertures by means of which it may be secured to pins or hooks fixed to said movable parts of the brush. I11 order to take the card-sheet off the brush or to replace it by another card-sheet, the two or more parts forming the body of the brush are placed at an angle to each other, so that the card-sheet is freed from the tension which it was up to then exposed to. Said card-sheet may now be taken off the pins or hooks and another card-sheet may be put upon the same. The parts of the block are then brought back into their former position, so as again to put the card-sheet under tension and to cause it to lie close to the surface of the block.

I have shown as an example one mode of construction of my improved scratching or scraping brush in the accompanying drawings, in

which similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the different views, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section through my improved brush, the latterbeing opened. Fig. 2 is a side view of the brush, the latter being closed. Fig. 3 is a front view of the same, and Fig. etis a detail.

The block or body proper of the brush is composed of the two parts a a which are connected by hinges b and are each provided with a series of pins 0. The latter take through apertures d of the card-sheet cl. The handle of the brush is divided in its longitudinal direction in two parts c 6 which are fixed one to one part of the same and which may be con nected with each other by a hook f and an ear f or by other suitable means. The parts 6 e are thus employed as levers for the purpose of obtaining a sufficient tension of the card-sheet with the expense of but little power.

Having thus fully described the nature of my said invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

1. A scratching,scrapin g or cleansing brush with a detachable or exchangeable card-sheet or the like, having its block or body proper composed of two or more parts movably con nected with each other, and having means allowing said card-sheet to be taken off, or put on, by bringing the block parts into an. angular position, and to be fixed and stretched by bringing the block parts into straight position, for the purpose as described.

2. A scratchin g,scrapin g or cleansingbru sh with a detachable or exchangeable card-sheet or the like, having its block or body proper, as well as its handle, composed of two parts movably connected with each other, and having means allowing said card-sheet to be taken oif, or put on, by bringing the block parts into an angular position, and to be fixed and stretched by bringing the block parts into straight position,for the purpose as described.

3. A scratching,scraping or cleansing brush with a detachable or exchangeable card-sheet or the like, having its block or body proper composed of two or more parts movably con" nected with each other, and having pins or hooks adapted to take through corresponding apertures of said card-sheet, and arranged so as to allow the latter to be taken 01f said pins or hooks, or put upon the same, by bringing the block parts into an angular position, and to be fixed and stretched by bringing the block parts into straight position, for the purpose as described.

4. A scratching, scraping or cleansing brush with a detachable or exchangeable card-sheet or the like, having its block or body proper as well as its handle, composed of two parts inovably connected with each other, and having pins or hooks adapted to take through corresponding apertures of said card-sheet, and

arranged so as to allow the latter to be taken off said pins or hooks by bringing the block parts into an angular position, and to be fixed and stretched by bringing the block parts into straight position by means of their handle parts, substantially as described.
