Application filed July 11 To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL H. HOLLEN- BECK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices for Use in Railway-Cars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 7

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in advertising devices for use in railway cars and the principal object of the invention is to provide a device which maybe readily placed in a railway car of the ordinary type for holding advertising signs such as are frequently seen in the ordinary tram cars.

Another object of the invention is to provide a car card holder which is so constructed that the card may be easily and quickly slipped in place and will conform to the curvature of the supporting plate.

Still another object of the invention is to provide a device which is adapted for attachment in either wooden or steel cars and which is so constructed that it may readily be removed in order that the same may be cleaned.

A further object of the invention is to provide a novel means for supporting a device on the usual baggage basket used in railway cars. 7 p

Another obj cct of the invention is to provide a device which may be constructed of a plurality of separable sections and also to provide a novel means for holding said sections in operative positions.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a sectional view through a portion of the side wall of a car showing the usual baggage rack and this improved car card holder in place.

E eferring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the side of an ordinary railway card provided with the usual molding 2. The baggage basket is designated generally by the numeral 3 and consists of the supporting arms or brackets 4 connected by the longitudinally extending bars 5 which form the supporting platform for the baggage or other articles placed in the rack.

The car card holder consists of a plurality of frame sections designated generally by the numeral 6 each of which comprises the longitudinally extending bars 7 connected by the transversely extending arcuate bars 8. The arcuate bars 8 are provided with the hooked ends 9 which are riveted or otherwise rigidly connected to the bars 7 and riveted or otherwise attached to the bars 8 ar the curved plates 10 which form the backing plates for the car cards. The lower edge of each plate 10 is provided with the bent back flange 11 which is relatively narrow while the upper edge of each of the plates is provided with a bent back flange 12 which is relatively wide. The space between the adjacent edges of these flanges is slightly less than the width of the car cards and it will be seen that in placing the Car in position the upper edge is first slipped beneath the flange 12 and due to the fact that this flange is of greater width than the flange 11 it will be seen that the lower end of the card may then be slipped back against the backing plate and slid down beneath the flange 11. It will thus be seen that the upper edgeof the card will be retained beneath the flange 12 due to its excessive width and the possibility of accidental removal of the card is eliminated. \Vith this structure it will be evident that the use of the ordinary dividing strips or springs used to hold the ordinary'type of car cards in place is eliminated. However, it is to be understood that if so desired such springs may be used."

In order to provide a means for holding the frame sections in place a suitable plate best illustrated in Fig. 9 is provided which consists of a body 13 provided with a plurality of openings 14 therein, the use of which will appear as the description proceeds. These openings are adapted to receive the stud or pin 15 carried by the transverse bars 8 and also to receive a suitable screw 16 which projects through a slot 17 formed in the bars 8. As shown in Fig. 3 the plate 13 is held in various adjusted positions on its respective bar by means of the pin 15 and screw 16 and it will thus be seen that the device may be adjusted to fit cars of various sizes. A suitable clamping spring 18 is riveted or otherwise secured to the forward end of the plate and this spring is adapted to surround one of the longitudinal bars 5 in order to attach the device to the baggage rack. In order to provide a means for attaching the opposite end of the device in position a suitable offset portion 19 is formed on each of the curved bars 8 and is provided with a countersunk opening 20 for the reception of the screw 21 which projects into the molding .2 as clearly shown in Fig. 3. It will thus be seen that the bar 7 adjacent the side of the car will seat within the lower rabbeted portion of the molding as will be clearly seen upon reference to Fig. 3. The coat hooks designated by the numeral 22 are attached by suitable screws 23 to the side of the car and are provided with the forwardly extending curved portions '24: which form seats, for the bars 7 near the side wall of the car and it will thus be seen that an auxiliary support is provided for the device.

of the adjacent frame are also bifurcated and seated in said bifurcated portions are the coupling pins 29 which are held in place by the rivets 30 and these coupling pins are provided with the slot 31 for the reception of the pins'26. A suitable head 32 is formed on the upper side of each of the coupling pins and these heads are adapted to limit the movement of the bars with relation to ea h other. In order .t0.cover the joint the sleeve, best illustrated in Fig. 8 and designated by the numeral 33,- is provided which is formed with the internal longitudinally extending groove 34' and this sleeve is slidable on one of the bars so asto' fit over its joint to cover the same. Each of the sleeves is provided on its exteriorwith a longitudinal groove 35 to accommodate the edge of the backing plate 10 'hereinbefore referred to. Inthe modified form ofthe supporting structures used for holding the device to the baggage rack reference will be had particularly to Fig. 10 in which the plate is designated by the numeral 36 and this plate like the plate 13 is provided with a plurality of spaced openings by meansof which it is adjustably attached to one of the frame bars. The forward end of the plate is prov-ided with the upturned portion 37'and a slot 38 is formed adjacent the upturned portion as will be clearly seen upon ref erence to the drawings. A cooperating clamp member 39 is provided and'is attached to the plate 36 by meansof a .set' screw 40 which projects through the slot 38 and into a suitable threaded opening in the clamp member as will be clearlyseen in the drawings. In the use of this device it will be evident that the plate 36 is substituted for the plate 13 and the clamp member 39 in place of the spring 18 andit will thus be apparent that the bar 5 will pass through the space formed between the curved portion 37 and the clamp member 39. 7

When the device is used in wooden cars the molding 2 is not ordinarilyapplied to such cars, and, therefore, a hook 40', best illustrated in Fig. 11, is provided, which is substituted for the hook 22 previously de scribed. In this construction it will be seen that the upper end of the vertical portion of said hook is provided Withan outturned arm 41, which in. turn is provided with a curved seat for engagement against the lower longitudinal bar of each of the frames. It will thusbe seen that the hook forms a seat for the bar in cars where the molding 2 is not used.

In order to cover the joints of the adjacent sections of the card holders and to eliminate the use of the sleeves 33 hereinbefore referred to, a connection plate, best illustrated in Fig. 12 is provided, and is clamped in said bars by. suitablescrew's.

A device of thercharacter' described comprising a plurality of frames, eachframe comprising a pair of spaced longitudinally extending rods, curved bars connected to the spaced longitudinally extending rods plates secured to said bars, means carried by the opposite ends of the plates for. holding advertising cards to the concave faces, means removably and adjustably secured to the plates for securing the same to a baggage rack and to the side of the car in which it is used.

2. A card supporting device for railway cars comprising a pair of spaced longi tudinally extending rods, cross bars connecting the longitudinally extending rods together, means secured to the cross bars for supporting advertising cards, and means for holding the rods and cross bars in position in a car in which the same is used.

3. A card supporting device for railway cars comprising a pair of spaced longitudinally extending rods, said rods being formed with a plurality of sections, means detacha bly connecting the sections together, cross bars connecting the rods, plates carried by the cross bars, means formed on said plates for supporting car cards, and means car ried by the rods and cross bars for holding the same in position in a car in which the same is to be used.
