Description

E. A. BANSCHBACH BUFFER Nov. 1, 1927. 1,647,766
Filed April 1'7. 1922 Patented Nov. 1 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD A. BANSCHBAGH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
. nurrnn.
Application filed. April 17, 1922. Serial No. 553,462.
This invention relates to a vehicle-buffer particularly designed and intended for use with motor vehicles, and a particular ob ect of the invention is to provide a buffer which is attachable to the vehicle and runmng gear frames above and below the ends of the frames. A further object is to provide a number of independent adjustable bars with end connecting means for combining them in a unitary impact member with a large contact surface. Other objects will appear hereinafter. I
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top view of a bufier with a plurality of parallel bars curved inwardly at the ends and the ends all connected together;
Figure 2 is a rear view of this bufi'ertaken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;.
Figure 3 is a sectional view of the buffer showing the connection to the vehicle and running gear frames;
Figure 4 is a view of a hinged end connecting device as shown in Fi ure 2; and
Figure 5 is another view 0 this end connector taken on the line 55 of Figure 4.
In carrying out this invention, a pair of supports are connected at'the end of a vehicle, preferably by attaching one end ofeach support to the vehicle frame and the other end to the running gear frame with a projecting vertical portion, as shown, for
example, in Figure v8, to which the buffer proper is connected.
A vehicle side frame 1 is supported from the running gear frame, represented by the axle 2 connected to the end of the side frame by the uppermost leaf of a leaf spring 3. A buifer member 63 in the form of a U-shaped resilient strip is connected on top of each- P side frame by means of a loop t with a hinge .plate 5, and the lower end of the member 63- is connected by a loop 6 to a bolt 7 which'is supported by plates 40 on each side of the spring 3 and clamped together over the top of the spring by a bolt -8. This provides a pair of spaced supporting members 63 which extend a distance in advance of the vehicle frame where they afford a support for a transverse buffer, the ends of which project beyond the members 63, the latter extending above and below the buffer.
A number of parallel bars 62 are mounted at the front of the side support 63 by means of a clamping plate 64 which has a number of fastening bolts 65 for separately clamping the bars in place. The extremities of these parallel bars 62 are preferably rounded inwardly and connected together by means of guard plates 66 against which the bar extremities are held by clamping plates 67. Instead of a separate clamping plate, the guard may be formed, as shown in Figures 4 and 5, of a'- two piece hinged guard 68 which is attached over the ends of the bars by means of clamping bolts 68.
In this construction itwillbe observed that the supporting basis is a pair of buffer members, each substantially U-shaped with a vertical outer portion extending somedistance in advance of the end ofvthe side frame vertical plane and separate ends attachable to the frame and gear above and below the end thereof and at a distance back of the extremity thereof, and a plurality of bumper bars adjustably attached to the support on the vertical plane portion.
2, In a buffer, a pair of supports attachable at the end of a vehicle frame .and ex tending vertically in advance thereof, a plurality of bumper bars mounted in the suports, and connecting means overlapping the ends of the bars for joining them to ether.
3. In a buffer, a pair of supports for attachment at the ends of a vehicle frame having a supporting portion in'a substantially vertical plane, bumper bars adjustable laterally in the supports, and means enclosing the ends of the bars for connecting them together.
4. In a buffer of the class described, a pair of supports adapted to be attached at the ends of a vehicleframe and having spaced vertically extending supporting portions, a plurality of bumper bars adjustable in and carried by the vertical supporting portions,
them together and mutually strengthening them,
,5. The combination .with a vehicle frame,
of a butler therefor, comprising a pair of {'6 supports adapted to project vertically in front of the frame, a plurality of bumper bars extending across the supports, means for separately attaching the bars to the supports, and means attached adjacent the ends 1 of the bars to form a strengthening connection for the bars atthe ends thereof.
6. In a buffer of the class described, a plurality of buffer bars arranged in a substantially vertical plane, and vertically extend- .lng means covering the ends of the bars and secured. thereto, extending transversely thereof and separate from the buffer sup-- port to unite the bars into a unitary impact member. I
7 L In a buifer of the class described, a plurality of separate bars arranged in a single v EDWARD A. BANSCHBACH.
