I Unit E TATES JAMES BOYVELL, OF PORT ARTHUR, CANADA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO SAMUEL W". RAY, OF SAME PLACE.
BROOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,214, dated February 4, 1896.
Application filed April 20, 1895 Renewed December 9, 1895. Serial No. 571,599, (No model.)
To aJZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES BOWELL, of Port Arthur, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and Improved Broom, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a broom composed of broom-corn and a fabric web, the latter being so arranged as to extend lengthwise of the broom, about centrally thereof and from side to side, and held by the binding wires or threads in close contact with the latter, thereby serving to sweep the finest dust and at the same time forming a backing for the layer or course of broom-corn at either side, thereby increasing the efficiency of the broom and preventing the quick wear thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a broom embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional side elevation, and Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation taken at right angles to Fig. 2.
The handle A of the broom is of ordinary form, and the upper ends of the broom-corn B or equivalent material are bound to the handle in the usual manner.
WVithin the broom, centrally thereof, a web 0, of woven or felted fabric, is introduced, such fabric being preferably of wool for the finer grades of brooms and of jute or other coarse fabric for the poorer grades. This fabric extends lengthwise of the broom and from side to side, and the courses of binding threads or wires D are utilized to bind the web to the broom-corn, which arrangement firmly holds the web in place and makes it form a backing to the layers 1) b of broom-corn at both sides of the web and increases its efficiency and wearing qualities. The web extends to the bottom of the broom, or substantially so, and serves to collect the finest dust. By this construction the web is provided practically with out increased labor in manufacture and is securely held in position, and a broom of greatly-increased efficiency and wearing qualities is produced.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent As a new article of manufacture, a broom composed of broom-corn secured to asuitable handle, and a fabric web located about centrally of the corn, ranging substantially from end to end and lengthwise of the broom, the web at its upper end being closely bound to the corn by strands passing through both, thereby forming a backing for the layers of corn at each side and forming an efficient dusting device at its lower end, substantially as described.
