SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,116, dated February 4, 1896.

Be it known that I, GEORGE R. FORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Chicago, in the count-y of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Scissors-Sharpener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved scissors-Sharpener; and the invention consists in a plate and swaging bolt or vrod attached thereto, inclined jaws in combination with projections, one at either side, projecting at an angle less than a right angle toward the swaging-rod and adapted to press and retain the blades of the scissors or shears in contact with the inclined projections and to guide the scissors to the proper position to be sharpened; and the object of the invention is to furnish a cheap and convenient device for sharpening scissors, in which the scissors are held in proper position to be sharpened by means of elastic guides. This objectIaccomplish by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-'- Figure l shows a perspective View of my improved scissors-Sharpener, showing` the side of the device opposite the one to which is attached the swaging-rod. Fig. 2 shows a plan View of my invention, showing the same side as shown in Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the reverse side, showing the position of the swaging rod or bolt upon the metallic plate. Fig. 4 is a sectional View on line 4 4 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction shown by the arrows. Fig. 5 is a sectional View on line 5 5 of Fig. 3, looking in the direction shown by the arrows in said Fig. 3.

A represents a metallic plate of any suitable form, provided with projections, one on either side, (shown by B B,) the faces of the projections B B being in the same plane and being set at an angle to a line drawn longitudinally through the plate A.
F represents a rod ot' hardened steel attached to one face of the plate A, as shown.
C represents the elastic guides secured to the plate A and supported preferably by means of wire. v(Shown by E.) Instead of a wire,
the support E may be made of any suitable material to retain the elastic guides in position. The same maybe composed of a portion of the plate, or the piece extendingfrom the plate A, or in any suitable manner for retaining the elastic guides C C in place. These supports E are shown by dotted lines in Figs. 2 and 3, and a section is shown in Fig. 4.
In using my invention the scissors are placed in the openings between the projections B B and the guides C O, as shown in Fig. l, and are then shut down, so as to crowd down closely against the swaging projections B B, and they are then drawn back, the edges of the scissors being swaged by means of the bolt and trimmed or smoothed in the back action of the scissors by means of the projections B B, so that a pair of scissors may be sharpened by a single operation, providing they be pressed sufficiently upon the blade to swage the edge as the scissors are drawn backward, the edge being swaged by means ofthe round bolt, and the edges trimmed by means of the projections B B, as above described. If, however, the scissors are not sufficiently sharpened by one operation the same maybe repeated.
The elastic guides C O may be made of rubber or any suitable material. They should be placed a suliicient distance from the projections B B to allow for the insertion of the scissors, but near enough to crowd the scissors in close contact with the projections B B.
The bolt F may be round or of any other suitable form.
The plate A is preferably made of steel.
I do not herein claim a scissors-Sharpener consisting of a plate havinglateral projections upon its opposite edges, and a hardened rod attached to one side of said plate and extending at an angle to the operative edges of the said projections, as such is not of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to have invented, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A Sharpener for scissors or shears, consisting of a plate having oppositely-extending projections provided with inclined edges, and oppositely-extending elastic guides opposed respectively t0 the inclined edges of the said projections for pressing the blades of the scissors or shears against the inclined edges of said projections, and a swaging-rod ICO mounted on the plate in operative relation to the projections and guides, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. In a scissors-Sharpener, the combination 5 of zr metallic plate having projections adapted to trim or swage the sides of the scissorsblades, a hardened sWaging-rod, elastic guides,
one on either side of the sWa'ging-rod for the purpose of pressing' the scissors-blades in eon- 1o tact with the swaging projection, and metallic supports Within the elastic guides in order to give stability to such guides, substantially as and for the purpose described.
