J. B. LORD. EDUCATIONAL APPLIANCE.
No. 553,533. Patented Jan. 28, 1896.
um kowl wl ATI'ORNEY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES B. LORD, OF RADCLIFFE, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO JAMES T. HOR- RIDGE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
, SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,533, dated January 28, 1896.
Application filed September 6,1896. Serial No. 561,624. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES B. LORD, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Radcliffe, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Educational Appliances, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of an educational appliance, more especially serviceable for purposes of the kindergarten system, the same embodying a sheet, plate, or surface of an adhesive nature, to which devices and articles employed in kindergarten may be attached, whether for word-building, mosaic, numeration, counting, &c., and object-teaching generally, such devices and articles being readily removable without injury or displacement to themselves or the surface.
The invention consists also of details of construction, as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 represents a face view of an educational appliance embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a section thereof on line x m, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a metal plate which is fitted into the frame 13, and provided with a coating 0 formed of, say, twelve pounds of glue and seven to fifteen pounds of glycerine, but the ingredients and proportions may be varied as desired, the composition being of an elastic and adhesive nature, especially adhesive.
It will be seen that the devices employed in education, especially those of the kindergarten system, are of the form of blocks D, which may be placed upon the coating 0 and remain supported thereon, as they adhere to the latter, and may be readily removed and reapplied without injury to the devices or the coating, the latter being practically permanent in its adhesive nature.
The plate A is formed of metal, but other suitable material that will not warp or be otherwise affected by the coating may be used, and thus the flat surfaceof the latter will be preserved.
The edges of the plate A are fitted in grooves E in the pieces forming the frame B, thus firmly supporting said plate without the use of a removable back, which, if employed, would yield when the devices D are pressed against the surface of the coating 0, and cause the latter to be irregular, whereby said devices would not firmly retain their places, this being avoided by the insertion of the plate in the grooves E, which are made in the solid portions of the side pieces of the frame, it being noticed that when said pieces are connected the plate A retains its position without liability of displacement as long as the frame remains intact.
It is evident that the appliance may be operated by a teacher or scholar, or both, and that when the devices D are removed from the coating, which may be accomplished simply by pulling the same from the coating, they may be reused, they being in tact in clean and non-sticky condition. 7
The metal plate A may be substituted by any other material which will accomplish the purposes of the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
- 1. An educational apparatus consisting of a rigid plate having an adhesive and elastic facing, and blocks adapted to be detachably fastened to said facing by contact therewith, substantially as and for the purpose set for h.
2. An educational apparatus, consisting of a plate having an adhesive and elastic facing and a frame in which the edges of the plate are seated, in combination with blocks adapted to be detachably fastened to said face by contact therewith, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. An educational appliance consisting of a plate, a coating of adhesive substance thereon, a frame for said plate, and blocks substantially as described adapted to be removably sustained on said coating by contact therewith, as set forth.
JAMES B. LORD. Witnesses:
S. MOCREADY, WM. G. MURRAY.
