Description

No. S33-,779.
UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU R.
UNITED STATES y PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL F. BAGLEY, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
BUTTONHOLEMOISTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 633,779, dated September 26, 1899.
Application filed March 30, 1899. Serial No. 711,090. (No model.)
To @ZZ wto'nt it may colwcr'rz':
Be it known that l, DANIEL F. BAGLEY, of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Buttonhole-Moistener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a device especially adapted for moistenin g but= tonhole's in collars, cuifs, shirts, dsc., and to so construct the device that it will be simple, economically made, and convenientljT applied to use, and also so constructed that the moistening pads or material employed when unfitted for use maybe readily replaced by new pads or material.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both gures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the coinplete device; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the jaws of the device viewed from the front, said jaws being adapted to carry the inoistening pads or material.
The body of the device consists of two haudles A and B, that are crossed and pivotally connected through the medium of a pin 10 in like manner as the handles or body portions of scissors; but preferably the handles are flat, and the inner edges of the grip-sections 12 are made to face one another to a greater or less extent, and said grip-sections are enlarged, so that directions or advertising matter may be displayed thereon. At the other end of each handle a jaw 13 is pivoted, and the said jaws are normally in alinement or are so placed that their inner edges directly face one another. The jaws 13 are preferably dovetail shape in cross-section, each comprising astraight outer memberand side members that are inclined in direction of each other. Each jaw is adapted to receive a pad 1i or a block or strip of absorbent material, and these pads or strips of absorbent material project beyond the opposin g faces of the jaws to a gi eater or less extent and are prevented from leaving the said jaws by horizontal arms 15,that are rearwardly projected from the outer ends of the front members of the jaws,as is shown particularly in Fig. 2. In connection with the pivot 10 washers 11 are used, the said washers intervening the edges of the pivot 10 and the contiguous side faces of the handles or body-sections of the device.
ln operation the jaws are dipped in water until the pads 14 are more or less saturated, the surplus water being shaken off before the device is used. The handles are then manipulated so as to bring the inoistened pads at opposite sides of the buttonhole from which the starch is to be extracted. Such application of the pads need be but momentary to produce the proper result, and after the pads are removed from engagement with the material at the buttonhole the buttonhole portion of the garment or article will be found to be pliable, while the adjacent starched portion will yet retain its stiffness.
The device is exceedingly simple and durable, is economic, and is capable of ready application.
Thejaws are pivotally attached to the handles, in order that they may be adjusted for use in connection with either horizontal or vertical but-tonholes, and the pivots of the jaws may be in the form of set-screws, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A buttonhole-moistener consisting of pivotally-connected handles, a jaw pivoted to each handle at one end thereof, the said jaws being in alinement at their inner edges, and absorbent pads contained within the said jaws, as and for the purpose specified.
2. A buttonhole-moistener, consisting of handles pivotally connected, a jaw pivotally connected with each handle, the said jaws being of dovetail shape in cross-section, each jaw being provided at its outer end with a stop, the inner faces of the jaws being in alinement with each other, and an absorbent pad located within the jaws and engaging the said stops, the inner ends of the pads, extending beyond the inner ends of the jaws, for the purpose set forth.
3. A buttonholemoistener, consisting of pivotally-connected handles, each handle be- ICO ing provided with a jaw projecting from one side of the handle at the end thereof, the said jaws being adjustable on the handles and absorbent pads contained within the said jaws, the inner faces of said pads being normally in alinelnent with each other, substantially as described.
4. A buttonholemoistener consisting of flat handles pivotally connected and having the inner edges of their grip-sections facing each other, the said grip-sections being enlarged, a jaw pivotally connected to one side of each handle at the end thereof, the said jaws facing each other and each comprising an outer or front member and two side members," the front members of the jaws being each provided at its outer end with a rearwardly-projected arm and absorbent pads located within the said jaws and engaging the gaging the said stops substantially as described.
