MOP-HEAD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,354, dated January 21, 1896.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, CHARLES MORGAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Freeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mop-Heads, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to certain improvements in mop-heads and it consists in a certain new construction fully described below and pointed out in the appended claims.

The drawings presented herewith show my preferred construction by means of two figures, of which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 2 is a section in line 2 2 of Fig. 1.

In the drawings, A is a mop-handle ter1ninating in a cross-head B, against which the mop-rags are to be held by means of a wire loop 0, the lower horizontal portion of which is opposed to the cross-head B when the rags are clamped in position. The loop 0 is preferably composed of wire bent to form a horizontal portion 0, end portions 0 0 which slide vertically and are guided by means of slight sockets b b in the opposite ends of the head, and hooks c c, which are bentinward and upward and engage with eyes'd upon a collar D, which encircles the handle and is sufficiently large to move freely thereon. WVithin this collar is a ratchet-lever E, provided at one end with a hook e, which hooks into an eye 12 upon the cross-head B, and the other end of the lever is formed into a handle 6 which is pressed away from the mop-handle by means of a coiled spring 6 held in place by a lug e beneath the lever-handle e at one end,

and at the other end by a socket on in the handle proper, A.

Upon the outer side of the leverE are a series of ratchet-teeth 6 adapted to engage an inturned point or edge d upon the collar D.

In operation the loop 0 is held in any desired position by means of the ratchet-lever E, which engages with the collar D. This engagement, however, may be released by pressing inwardupon the lever-handle e and the position of the horizontal portion a of the loop 0 regulated at will.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination in a mop-head, of the handle, A, the cross-head, B, the collar, D, the loop, 0, having the horizontal portion, 0, the end portions, 0, c and hooked to the collar, D, the ratchet lever, E, hinged to the cross-head and provided with ratchet teeth to engage the collar, and a spring interposed between it and the handle to keep up the engagement between the lever and the collar; substantially as described.

2. The combination with the handle, A, of the cross head, B, having the end sockets, b, b, and eye, b the lever, E, having thehook, e, and the ratchet teeth, 6 the spring, 6 the loop, 0, the collar, D, having cars, 61, to which the ends of the loop are hooked, and a tooth, or edge, (1 adapted to engage the ratchet teeth, 6 substantially as described.
