To aid w lwm it may concern Be it known that I, Eownnn B: GoLnEN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Hamilton, in the county of entworth and Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mops, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in handle mops,land more particularly to an improved mechanism for detachably securing the mop cloth to the handle, and Consists essentially of a rigid and a' pivotal jaw for engaging the mop cloth therebetween, and a resilient member rigid with the pivotal jaw and extending upward and adapted to yieldably embrace the handle andto cause the said pivotal jaw to clamp the cloth against the rigid jaw by tensional pressure.
The invention has for its objects, to provide a simplified and inexpensive device of the class specified, that will be durable, efiicient and easily operated.
These, together with other aims of the invention, may be obtained by the combination, construction, and arrangement of the parts as will be hereinafter more fully de scribed, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
Reference may now be had to the accompanying drawing, in which 2- Figure l is a front elevation of the improved device; and,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detailed view of the movable jaw.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The mop handle is indicated by A. B is a plate having pressed therefrom a plurality ofalternately opposed semi-circular integral members 2 arranged in staggered relation, wherein is inserted the said handle, the end of which is tapered to assure a tight fit.
The plate B is deflected at an angle extending downward forming a jaw 3. A resilient wire C is bent at right angles at both ends to form journals l pivoted in brackets 6 rigid on the side of said plate opposite to that in which the jaw 3 is deflected from. The said brackets are located on said plate just above the jaw 3, and adjacent to the lateral edges of the plate.
The intermediate length of the wire G extends in parallel relation to its journals 4;, in a. downward direction substantially paralleling the jaw 3, and after passing the termination of the jaw curves upwardly at 5 and isdeflected inwardly to a closer par allel relationship at 7. Thespace between the two related portions of the wire at this point is a trifle wider than the diameter of the handle A, and these portions 8 of the wireintersect the handle diagonally at 9 in a slight degree 5.) curve, one portion on either side of the handle. v
The wire now curves abruptly at 10 and again intersects the handleat 11, after which it 'is bent in horseshoe formation around the handle, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and indicated by 12. Between the aforesaid abrupt curve 10 and the handle,the two portions, of -wire are bent inwardly at 13 so that the space between at that point is less than the diameter of the handle and it is provided at each end with a pair of extended portions, which are bent around the two portions of wirlel C, thereby holding the same rigid therewit A jaw 14 is secured at each end to the two portions of wire C, and tensionally engages the mop cloth D against the jaw 3, when the wire is in the position hereabove set forth. The jaw 14 is angular or L shaped in cross section to constitute double contact edges.
To release the cloth, the wire 0 is swung to a position as indicated in chain lines in Fig. 2, the bent in portions 13 of the wire being yielclable and forcibly passed by the handle.
To clamp the cloth between the two jaws, the above described operation is reversed.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a handle, of a jaw rigid with the handle, a pivotal aw, a resilient member rigid with the pivotal jaw, passing around the lower edge of said rigid jaw and extending upward on the side of the same opposite to that. upon which is the pivotal jaw, and means for yieldably retaining said member in the aforesaid position.
