PLUMBERS TACK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,021, dated January 14, 1896.

Le it known that I, JOHN B. SCHMITT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plumbers Tac-ks, of which the following is a specification.

My invention, which relates to improvements in plumbers tacks, has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this character 'which will effectively serve for its intended purposes; and such invention consists in a plumbers tack embodying the peculiar combination and novel arrangement ot parts hereinafter describedand specifically pointed out in the appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l illustrates the manner in which my improved tack appears in practical use. Fig. 2 is a rear perspective view of the tack. Fig. 3 is a front view thereof, showing the same securing a pipesection. Fig. 4c is a vertical section taken on the line 4: et of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a horizontal section of the same, taken on the line 5 5 ot' Fig. 3.

My improved tack comprises a pair of jaws A, which have each an outwardly-curved Wing or clamp portion B, the impact or clamp faces of which are serrated or roughened, whereby they will be embedded in the pipe and hold it from slipping, such jaws also having screw holes a. a, as shown. The rear face ot each jaw has a centrally-disposed seat or groove C, extending entirely across, the edges of which are angular at c whereb y to form guides for the upper and lower edges of the connecting member or bar D, which extends entirely across the backs of the jaws A, to which it is secured by the rivets E, secured to the said jaws, and which pass through elongated horizontal slots d. (l in the bar D, as shown in the drawings.

So far as described, it will be readily seen, the two jaws, while at all times connected and heldin a proper alignment on the bar D, are each independently adjustable on the said bar. This, it is obvious, permits the tack to be secured to pipes of different diameters u and avoids the necessity of making the tacks.

By referring now more particularly to Figs. i and 5 it will be seen the bar D seats tiush in the groove or seats made in the rear faces of the jaws A, so as to leave a free fiat abutting face for the rear of the tack; and to further provide tcr such a result I form the slot jaws in the bar D with beveled edges (7.3 to receive the beveled ends c of the rivets E, the rear faces of which are flat, as clearly shown.

l am aware that tacks formed of a pair of jaws having connecting members fixedly joined thereto, to set the jaws to a xed size to tit a pipe of a corresponding size, is not new, and l make no claim therefor.

Having thus described my invention, what l claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent, is-- A plumbers tack comprising a pair of jaws having each a horizontal seat or groove on the rear face, the edges of which form guides, a cross bar fitting the groove with its edges abutting the guides, said bar having elongated slots provided with bevel or countersunk edges, and rivet members secured to the jaws having beveled heads iitting the elongated slots, all arranged substantially as shown and described.
