ASH-CART.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,589, dated January 7, 1896.

Application filed May 31, 1895. Serial No. 551,299. (No model.)

To' all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HERMANN SOHELLER, merchant, a subject of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, and a resident of Berlin, in the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful `Improvements in Ash-Carts, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to dust or scavenging carts and is intended to so construct them that the dust fetched from dwellings may be put on the cart Without causing any inconvenience by the spreading` of the dust, that,

further, the attendants may stand on the carts Without having close-contact With the chambers receiving the dust, and, lastly, that the public may not be annoyed by the dust fiying about or by the sight of the contents of the cart.

This improved cart is represented in the annexed drawings, in Which- Y' Figure l is a longitudinal View; Fig. 2, a rear view, Figs. 3 and 4 being a longitudinal and a cross-section,respectively.

The interior of the cart, which is closed all round, is divided by cross Walls A A A2 into several compartments, said Walls being provided with door-like openings B, Fig. 4, also with a cross brace or bar c, so as to form a joint or groove, into Which the door or board C is inserted and kept in place by a bolt E. Above each of these compartments there is an opening G G G arranged in the top cover of said cart, the length of which opening corresponds With the length of the compartments A. Each openin g is covered with a Wire-netting of about one-inch mesh, and in addition may be closed by folding boards F F F2.

For iillin g the cart in the first place the Wall C is placed against that partition-Wall A Which is farthest from the door M. Then a removable curtain suspended on tWo bars is brought in front of the opening A, so that its lower end Weighted with a round iron bar seWed into it assumes a position inside the first compartment, as represented for partition A' of the second compartment. The top cover F of the foremost compartment being closed, the attendants enter the cart through the door M and there empty the bucket, box or the like, by

VWhile a spreading of the dust toward the outside is prevented by the curtain H. Vhen this compartment is filled up to the upper edge of the cross-Wall C, the latter as Well as the curtain H is brought to the middle partition-Wall, and after the middle partition has also been filled up in like manner the same operation is repeated With the last comparu ment, in Which latter instance the attendant stands in the small square space behind the doors M. In order to preclude the least escape of dust there is another curtain N attached to the entrance-door.

' Pis a side door by means of Which the unloading of the dust on the dumping-ground is effected.

As a rule, the openings in the top cover are closed only before the loading of the respective compartments is to start, so that in the empty compartments good ventilation is obtained. This ventilation is essential, as the foul air concentrated in the cart would be detrimental to the health of the attendants.

A dust or scavenging cart having inner cross Walls A provided with doorlike openings, a plate C being inserted into the lower part of said openings, the upper part on the inside of said Walls receiving a curtain H, Which latter is displaceable and suspended from the cover of said cart, substantially as set forth.

2. A dust or scavenging cart having in combination With the arrangements described for receiving dust and the like a ventilation arrangement Gin the cover of said cart, oonsisting of openings F equal in their length to the width of the respective compartments covered by a Wire netting and clothed with folding boards or covers, substantially as set forth.
