IM PROVEM ENT IN FARE-BOXES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 218,973, dated August 26, 1879 application filed July 16, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. HORNUM, of the city, county, and State of' New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fare-Boxes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of a fare-box embracing my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section thereof in the plane of the line a' or, Fig. l.

This invention relates to fare-boxes; and consists in, first, the combination, with a tilting platform mounted in open bearings to permit its removal, of a money-drawer fitted into guard in the drawer, for the purpose hereinafter specified, and a stop in the box, by whose action, jointly with that of the stop' in the drawer, the removal of the platform is allowed to take place only when the money-drawer is removed, substantially as hereinafter specified; second,'in a f'are-box, the parts of which are joined by inside fastenings, a tilting platform, which is mounted in open bearings to permit its removal, and thereby give access to the fastenings, as more fully hereinafter described.

In the drawings, the letter A designates the body of a fare-box constructed with an aperture, b, in the front and near the top for the admission of fare-money, and a deflector, G, beneath the aperture, on which the money falls.

The letter D designates a tilting platform to receive the lmoney dropping from the deiiector C, this platform being connected with a rod, e, or other device for tilting the same, and F is a money-drawer fitted into the box beneath the platform.' This drawer F is arranged to belocked in the box A. n

In thc drawer F, I arrange a stop, g, consisting, in this example, of a cross-bar, whereby the tilting platform D is arrested-when tilted l in dotted outline. I also provide the drawer F with a guard, H, of such anature that while thefare-money may be dropped into the drawer contents of' the money-drawer can be abstracted from an upper direction by breaking one of the walls of the box or the glass in such walls, and introducing the hand through the opening thus formed into the drawer, there being no check to the motion of the platform. This is prevented in my box by the stop and guard.

The guard H consists, in this example, of a piece of sheet metal bent and secured to an appropriate part of the drawer F; but the same can be formed in other ways, one modification being to construct the same of two or more bars running parallel to the bar composing the stop g.

The platform D is provided with trunnions` t, whereby it is mounted in bearings, one of which is shown at J, Fig. 1, in dotted outline. These bearings J are open at the top, so that the trunnions c' may be readily placed therein or removed. The platform D is thus rendered removable. A stop, k, in the box, however, jointly with the stop gin the drawer, prevents the removal of the platform from its bearings except when the drawer F is removed from the box. This stop k consists of a sill or other projection on one or both sides of' the box, and being so arranged as to allow an upward movement of the platform only when the latter is in a verticalposition. The stop gis a barrier to such a position of the platform. Hence the effect of' the guard H is not frustrated by the removability of the platform.

The parts of the box A are joined by inside fastenin gs, usually consisting of screws, as clearly shown, both to improve the appearance of the box and to prevent its dismemberment for malicious purposes.

By making the platform D removable I am enabled to obtain access to such fastenings without difficulty. Various glass plates, L M N O, moreover, are used in the construction of my box to render visible the money dropping on the platform D.

' It is obvious that these plates should be cleaned from time to time 0n their inner surfaces as Well as without, and it will readily be seen that this is made practicable by the removability of the platform. Y

The two. glass plates L M are on the front `of the boX A, Where its frame is partly vertical and partly inclined, and such plates are fitted into grooved or rabbeted openings p q, one in the vertical portion of the frame and the other in the inclined portion thereof. These openings p q are of rectangular shape, and their grooves are on three sides, one, or the fourth, side thereof--namely, that side which is at the angle on the front of the boxbeingleft plain. Forthe purpose of confining the glass plates L M on said plain sides yof the openings p q, I make use of a rail, R,

which is shouldered or rabbeted to catch over lthe edges of the plates, and fastened to the 'frame between the plates by screws s or other suitable means.

,By this arrangement I am enabled to (lisplace or slide out both of the glass plates L `M by simply detaching the rail R.

What I claim as new, and desire' to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. In a fare-box, the combination, with a tilting platform mounted in open bearings to permit its removal, of a money-drawer tted into the box beneath the platform, a stop and a guard in the drawer, for the purpose specifled, and a stop in the box, by Whose action,-

jointly with that of the stop in the drawer, the removal ofthe platform is allowed to take place only when the money-drawer is removed, substantially as described.

2. In a fare-box, the parts of which are joined by inside fastenings, a tilting platform, which is mounted in open bearings to permit its removal, and-thereby give access to the fastenings, substantially as described.
