To all 'whom t may concern:

Be it known that I7 AUBREY A. BURRows, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of the city of Toronto, county of York, Province of Ontario, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fare-Boxes, described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, that form part of the same.

The principal objects of this invention are to eliminate the possibility of the pilfering of fares from the cash box and to devise a simple and effective structure which will insure the closing and locking of the cash box as it is withdrawn from its inclosing'casing.

he principal feature of the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts whereby the cover of the cash box is, upon the insertion of the box into the casing, brought into engagement with means for positively closing the cover as the box is withdrawn by slidable contact with an opening in the cover.

In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevational vpart vertical section of a fare box showingthe cash box inserted and the cover thrown back.

Fig. 2 is a front elevational view showing the cash box inserted and the outer door or cover of the casing removed.

Fig. 3 is a sectional elevational detail showing the cover of the cash box in engagement with the locking mechanism in the case.

Fig. 4 is a sectional detail showing the cash box partly withdrawn.

, Fig. 5 is a sectional detail showing the cash box almost entirely withdrawn and the cover in the position of being locked.

In the application of this invention. the main casing 1 of the fare box is open at the front side 2 from top to bottom, such opening being closed by a suitable door which is not shown in the drawings as it forms no part of the present invention.

Mid-way of the height of the casing 1 is arranged a pair of side guide bars 3 which are preferably formed with the upper beveled edges 4. The cash box 5 is of a simple sheet metal structure rectangular in shape and open at the top and the cover 6 Vfits between the side walls resting Hush therewith when closed and being supported upon the hinge members 7 at the front side. The cover is provided with side flanges 8 which extend down into the box in such a manner as to prevent the possibility of an instrument being inserted from the side of the cash box as it is being withdrawn from the casing.

l/Vithin the casing 1 and above the guide bars 3 is arranged a transverse partition 9 which extends between the side walls and on the forward side of this partition and centrally of itsY width is secured a vertically arranged bar 10. At the forward side of this bar is secured a flat bar 11 which is of slightly greater width than the bar 10 and the upper end thereof is bent forwardly in va quarter circle forming the curved guide 12.

The lower end 13 `of the bar 11 is bent outwardly and extends downwardly close to the cover 6 of the cash box when closed.

The upper forward end of the curved guide 12 1s preferably secured to a lug 14 which forms part of the frame 15 to which the upper transparent structure 16 of the fare box is secured thereby locking the top member. The arrangement of securing the top part of the fare box may however be altered without interfering with the essential features of this invention.

The cover 6 at its free end is formed with a T-shaped slot 17 opening Vcentrally through the end. The center portion of the slot is adapted to pass the lug 14 and the bar 10 while the side portions 18 receive the edges of the bar 1l, said bar engaging the cover and holding it securely from being removed through the box being pulled outwardly.

A ratchet lock for the cover is provided in the form of a toothed wheel 19 into which the edge of the cover lits when the box is placed in position and the cover placed so .has been moved into place, that is to say the cash box cover cannot be opened out ast the perpendicular once the outer door o the fare box has been closed.

When the cash box has been placed in position, the cover slopes slightly inward as illustrated in Fig. 3 and rests against the curved guide 12.

In reinoving'the cash box as it is pulled outwardly the curvedV guide 12 engaging' the edges of the slot 17 causes the cover to. swing downwardly and this movement continues until the cover moves to its closed position, the final movement thereof to the locking position being insured by the curved lower end 13 of the bar 11 riding over the inwardly projecting portions 21 of the cover at the sides of the central portion of the slot 17. v

It will be noted that the side flanges 8 of the cover 6 effectively close the opening between the Vtop of the side walls of the cash box and the cover plate as it swings downwardly so that there will be; no .openings exposed outside of the side walls of vthe main casing.

A structure such as described is extremely simple, contains very few parts and there are no delicate mechanisms to get out of order, yet it is extremely positive in its operation.

What I claim as my invention is l. In a fare box, the combination with the cash box having a hinged cover provided with an opening in the end, Aand guiding means adapted to enter the opening inthe said cover when it is in the wide open position to slidably engagesaid cover and Veiect the closing thereof as the cash box is withdrawn.

In a fare box, the combination with the main casing and a cash box slidably arranged therein, the cover of said cash box having a slot opening from its outer end and having its width increasing as it extends inwardly from the edge,` of va guide bar rigidly supported from the main casing and extending into the slot in said cover and yGopies of this patent muy he ;obtainzdfior slidably engaging the sides thereof, the upper end of said guide bar being turned outwardly to enter thev slot when the. cover is open. and extending" downwardly the closing ofthe cover as theo-ash box is withdrawn from the main casing.

A fare box comprising a main casing having a transverse partition arranged intermediately between the front and the back thereof, a rigid. guide perpendicularly arranged midway of the width of said partition'and having its upper end extending forwardly, said guide having laterally extending ianges, a cash box having a hinged cover formed with a slot in itsouter'end adapted when the cover and slidably engage said guide memberand to retain contact with the flanges ofsaid guide during the withdrawal of the box 4to Vswing the cover downwardly to its locked position, and means for preventing the withdrawal of the cover from'engagement with the guide after the box has been inserted into the main casing.

1. In a fare box, the combination with the main casing having a transverse vertically arranged partition arranged intermediately between the front and the back, a T-shaped guide perpendicularly arranged and secured midsway of the width of said partition and having a forward curved upper end, a cash box adapted to slide into said casing with the cover open, said cover having a T-shaped slot in its free endadapted to receive the guide member, and a ratchet lock adapted to engage the edge lof the cover upon its insertion to prevent its withdrawal.

5. In a fare box, the combination with the cash box having a hinged cover, of a rigid guide adapted to slidably interlock with the outer edge of said cover to close said cover on the withdrawal of the box.
