SILO-IDOOR CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters iatent.
TPatented Oct. 31, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it lmown that I, CHARILES J. PERKINS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Des Moines, county of Polk, and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Silo- Door Constructions, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in silo door constructions, and has for its object the provision of an improved construction of this character which is strong and durable in use and also capable of constituting a ladder for the silo.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a front view of a silo construction embodying my invention, Fig. 2, an enlarged horizontal section taken through a door thereof, Fig. 3, an enlarged face view of a door frame detached and showing the door therein, Fig. 4:, an enlarged section taken on line 44 of Fig. 1, Fig. 5, an enlarged detail view illustrating a modified construction of positioning member for the door, Fig. 6, a section taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 5, and Fig. 7, a section illustrating a modified form of door frame construction.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, comprises a plurality of oblong rectangular door frames mounted in the silo one above the other, each of said door frames consisting of side channel members 8 and top and bottom channel members 9 and 10 respectively. The side channel members 8 are of a size to embrace adjoining edges 11 of the silo wall construction and the lower chan-.
nel member 10 is inwardly. offset to fit loosely within the upper channel member 9 of the door frame below, thus forming shoulders 12 resting upon the upper edges of the said upper channel member 9. The door frames are set in the silo construction as indicated and rigidly secured therein and thereto by means of mortar, as shown.
Each of the door frames is provided with a substantially rectangular sheet metal door 13 fitting against the inner side of the frame on its outer face vertical positioning channel members 17 arranged to fit snugly within the corresponding door frame to position the door thereon against either vertical or lateral displacements, said members 17 being secured in position by means of the bolts 16 which also serveto secure the ends of the strips 14. Buttons 18 are pivoted to the outer ends of bolts 16 and serve as means for detachably securing the doors in posi tion in their frames.
In the form of construction illustrated in Figs- 5 and 6, the positioning members 17 on the door 13 are in the form of angle irons and sleeves 16 are'arranged about bolts 16 to effect a mounting for buttons 18, as will be readily understood.
In the form of construction illustrated in Fig. 7, the inner shoulder 12 on frame 10 is formed lower than the outer shoulder 12 and the rear side 9 of the channel member 9 shaped to correspond.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred forms of construction for carrying my invention into effect, these are capable of variations and modifications without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of constructions set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a silo construction, a door frame in combination with a door adapted to close the opening in said frame, positioning members secured to the outer face of said door adjacent the lateral edges thereof and of a length substantially the same as the height of the door frame opening, a truss member comprising a Strip of metal having its ends secured to said door between the same and said positioning strips, and its central portion secured centrally to the door, the intermediate portions of said strip being bowed outwardly, bolts extending through said positioning members, the ends of said strips and said door and turn buttons pivotally mounted on the outer ends of said bolts, as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a silo construction, a door opening, a plurality of super-imposed door frames arranged in said opening, each of said frames comprising side channel members adapted to embrace the walls of said open- Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
ing and top and bottom channel members having the flanges thereof extending upwardly and downwardly respectively, the flanges of the bottom members being contracted to fit between the flanges of the adjacent upper member, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
