Be it known that we, JOHN W. I-IUBBARD and ORLANDO R. WINsLow, citizens of the United States, residing at Marsheld, in the county of Webster and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Book-Rest, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to book -rests and copy-holders, our object being to provide a device which carries an index-linger to mark the place for copying or reading, and operating mechanism therefor, and a clamp to hold the book open, and which holder is adjustable for dierent sizes of books or papers both as to width and as to thickness.

With these and other obj ects in view our invention consists of the details of construction and the combination of parts hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed outin the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a book-.rest and copy-holder constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail sectional views illustrating the manner of mounting the guide-rod. Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views of the index-fin ger or pointer. Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of the spring-clamp. Fig. S is a detail view of one of the adjusting-bars.

Referring to the various parts by numerals, 1 designates a back support or plate made of wood, sheet-iron, or other suitable material, strengthened on its back by transverse cleats 2 and 3, which are fastened thereto by bolts 4 and thumb-nuts 5.

6 designates a stiff wire brace suitably hinged at 7 to swing into folded position or be retracted to supporting position. This supporting-plate 1 is provided with legs 8, and adjacent thereto in horizontal alignment along the front face of plate 1 are rests 9 of cast metal, preferably in the form of brackets. These support the foot of the book. The top thereof is held in place by a spring-clamp 10, centrally provided with a iinger-loop or button 12 and formed at either end with an arched portion 13, outwardly and downwardly bent portion 14, a coiled portion 15, which receives the pivot-screw 16, and a straight tension member 17 provided with a handle-loop 1S,and resting against the retaining screw or lug 19.

Parallel with the left side of supportingplate 1 is guide-rod 23, which is held in adjustable alignment by means of two similar arms, the upper arm 21 and the lower arm 22,.

which are pivoted against the edge of plate 1 by means of set-screws 23, so as to swing in the plane of said vertical edge. On their outer ends these arms carry bearing-spindles 24, bolted thereto at right angles, so as to turn in sockets 25 provided in said arms. These bearing-spindles 24 comprise the journal end 26, threaded to receive nut 27, the transverselyperforated block 2S, provided with thumbscrew 29 and adapted to receive the guide-rod 20, and the stub-axle 30 on the outer end, on which the belt-pulleys 31 are journaled. Stubaxles 30 are threaded at their outer ends 32 to receive nuts 33, which secure pulleys 3l thereon. The outer flange of the lower pulley is enlarged and milled to provide an adjusting wheel 34. These pulleys are grooved to receive a round leather endless belt 35, which is secured at its meeting ends 36 to the middle portion of projecting end 37 of index-finger or pointer 3S. This indeX-iingeris provided with a transverse sleeve 39, threaded over guiderod 20, and is continued on in an arm 40, which extends substantially across plate 1, and is provided with a telescoping extension 41, for use with the back extension, presently to be explained.

In case plate 1 is not wide enough to hold the ledger, bank-book, or paper that is to be copied or read, we provide an extension-plate 42, provided with cleats, legs, and bracketrests similar to plate 1. Secured to the cleats thereof are adj usting-bars 43, perforated with a plurality of holes 44, which are adapted to seat on bolts 4 and be secured in adjustment by thumb-nuts 5. The upper bar 43 is backwardly curved at 45 to receive the back of the open book. The lower bar `is below the horizontal bracket-rests 9, and therefore out of line with the book and not curved.

In the use of our book-rest and copy-holder, if a small book'or a single sheet is to be held, the back brace 6 is adjusted to support back plate l at suitable inclination, and the sheet IOO is placed on rests 9 with its upper end securely held by spring-clamp 10. The arms 2l and 22 are swung up enough to carry guide rod 20 into a plane just above the surface of supporting-plate l and are there secured by set-screws 23. The index-iin ger 38 is now adj usted to the proper position on the page by turning adjusting-wheel Set, and thereby revolving endless belt 35, which carries said finger. If the belt slips on pulleys 31, it may be stretched by tightening the meeting ends 36. XVhen the page is copied and it is desired to turn it, index-finger 3S is swung up out of the way. The torsion of belt 35 tends to restore said finger and to keep it in place.

If the book is too wide for plate l, the extension-plate l2 is suitablyadjusted by means of holes it and nuts 5. The book is rested against curve l5 and opened, and index-iinger extension il is pulled out, so as to indicate on the right-hand page.

Changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sac'riicing any of the advantages of this invention.

In a book rest, the combination with a suitable supporting plate braced at its rear and provided at-its ioot with bracket rests and at its head with a spring clamp, of upper and lower arms pivoted to swing in a plane perpendicular to said plate and connected at their outer ends by a guide bar swiveled in said ends, an index inger adapted to reciprocate along said guide bar, and mechanism to recip` recate said index iinger, substantially as described.

In a book rest, the combination with a suitable supporting plate braced at its rear and provided at its foot with bracket rests and at its head with a spring clamp, of upper and lower arms pivoted to swing in a plane perpendieularto said plate, each of said arms being provided in its outer end with a laterally proj cctin g bearing spindle comprising a shaft journaled in said arm, a transversely perforated box for a guide bar and a stub axle provided with a belt pulley, a guide bar adjusted in said perforated boxes by mean s of set screws provided therein, an endless belt passing over said pulleys, an index iin ger provided with a sleeve arranged to reciprocate on said guide rod, and attached at its adjacent end to said belt and having its farther end adapted to cxtend transversely across said plate, and a hand wheel secured to said lower pulley whereby said index finger may be adjusted along the face of said plate, substantially as described.

In a book rest, the combination with a suitable i supporting pla-te, braced at its rear and provided with bracket rests atits foot, and with a spring clamp at its head, and with a reciprocating in dex iin ger at one side, said iin ger being telescopically extensible, et' an extension plate braced at its rear and simil arl y provided with bracket rests, and also provided with laterally extending parallel bars secured to the rear of said extension plate and havin a plurality of perforatious through their outer ends, by means of which said bars may be secured to and longitudinally adjusted on the rear of said supporting plate by means of thumb screws provided on said latter plate, substantially as described.
