SEWING-MACHINE TABLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 551,671, dated December 17, 1895.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE L. GRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Tables or Stands, of which the following description, taken in connection with the drawings herewith accompanying, is a specification.

My invention relates to that class of sewing-machine tables or stands in which the machine, when not in use, may be lowered beneath the top of the table and the latter be converted into a desk or table by means of an adjustable leaf or cover adapted to be moved into position over the table proper and cover the opening through which the machine is lowered, the object of my invention being to provide means of cheap and simple construction for protecting the machine from injury, and also from view when lowered 011 its supporting-platform from operative position above the stand or table, which object I secure by the means forming my invention, as hereinafter set forth in detail, and pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a sewing-machine stand or table embodying my invention, showing themachine in a lowered position and the extension leaf or cover in an extended position; Fig. 2, a plan view of the same; Fig. 3, a sectional view through the center with the lower part of the framework broken away, showing the machine-supporting platform in a raised position; and Fig. 4 the same, showing the machine-supporting platform in a lowered position beneath the top of the table.

To explain in detail, a represents the supporting-stand; b, the top, having an opening 17 arranged about central therein, in which the hinged machine-supporting platform 0 is adapted to be supported, and b the hinged leaf or cover which is adapted to cover the opening I), as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, when the machine is in a lowered position and be turned outward to serve as an extension-leaf when the machine is raised to an operative position.

The platform 0 is hinged to the front edge of the opening I), in order that it may be lowered from the rear side thereof, and is supported when in a raised position by a hinged piece a secured to the rear edge of the opening I), on the free edge of which the platform is adapted to rest, as shown.

On the under side of the platform 0 and below the drip-pan 0 supported thereby is attached a covering strip or piece (1 of wood or similar suitable material, which, when the machine is lowered from its operative position above the table, ismoved to a position at the forward side of the stand to present a rigid face-wall for the purpose of protecting the machine from injury when in its lowered position and also hide the same from view at the forward side of the stand. The piece-d to perform such functions is made sufficiently large to cover the platform when in its lowered position, and is also preferably formed to present an ornamental appearance. Said covering-piece (Z is moved with the platform when the latter is raised with a machine to its operative position, and also serves when in such raised position as a protection to the platform and its connected parts at the lower side thereof.

As an additional protection to the machine when in a lowered position to that given by the piece 61- already referred to, and in order to form a box-like casing to inclose the same which will be formed only when the machine is lowered, and be removed when the machine is raised so that a free and unobstructed space is left beneath the table, I have provided a strip of flexible material d, which is attached at one end to the platform 0, or part thereof, and at its opposite end to a strip d located at the rear of the stand, which flexible strip forms a wall to protect the machine from below when in its lowered position, as shown in Fig. 4. WVhen the platform is raised, such lower flexible wall is folded back to a position at the rear of the stand, as shown in Fig. 3. The strip cl, to which in the present instance shown the rear edge of the flexible strip d is secured, is supported at its ends in the drawerframes a and forms the rear wall of the pocket or receptacle in which the machine is supported. The end or side walls of the pocket, in the present instance shown, are formed by I i V the sides e e of the ordinary sliding drawer e, which are made of the proper size and form to close the side openings of the pocket. These side walls e 6 maybe stationary and attached to the under side of the table I) in lieu of forming part of the drawer as described, but I prefer the latter way as the most cheap and simple.

I laving thus set forth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

1. In a sewing machine stand or table, the combination with the top having an opening therein, of a drop-platform for carrying the machine head, provided with acovering piece, as (1*, attached to its under side, said platform being hinged at the front edge of the opening in the table, whereby the covering piece on its under side is moved in a position, when the platform is lowered, to present a rigid wall at the front of the stand, and, when the platform is raised, said covering piece is moved therewith to protect the same from beneath, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a sewing machine stand or table, the combination with the top having an opening therein, of a drop-platform provided with a rigid covering piece, as (1 attached to its under side, said platform being hinged at the front edge of said opening whereby the covering piece on its under side is moved to and from a position atthe front of the stand upon the lowering and raising of the platform retherein, of a drop-platform for carrying the machine hinged at the front edge of said opening, and a pocket for inclosing the machine when in a lowered position, consisting of a rigid coverin g piece attached to the underside of the platform to be movable therewith and form the front wall of th 0 pocket when the in achine islowered, a flexible strip attached at one end to the rear side of the platform. and at its opposite end to a support at the rear of the stand, forming the lower wall of the pocket, and the side walls, said parts being arranged and operated, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.

In a scwin g machine table, the combination with a hinged drop-platform for carrying the machine, of a pocket or receptacle forinclosing the latter when in a lowered position, consisting of the front, rear and lower pieces, and the movable end pieces carried by the drawer e, substantially as deseri bed and for the purpose set forth.
