TRUSS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,811, dated December 3, 1895.

Application filed July 1 5, 189 5.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOEL U. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at-Oincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trusses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being had to the annexed drawings, which form part of this specification.

My invention comprises a specific combination of devices wherewith the pads of a double truss can be adjusted toward or away from each other or set at any suitable inclination, the details of said devices being hereinafter more fully described,and then pointed out in the claim.

In the annexed drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of a pair of truss-pads embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontalsection of the same,the pads proper being omitted and their positions indicated by dotted lines.

The connecting member of my truss is a light cross-bar A, that bows outwardly, as seen in Fig. 2, and has near its ends longitudinal slots a a, traversed by pivot-screws B B, that engage with plates 0 O, to whose inner sides the pads proper c c are secured in any suitable manner. These pad-plates are usually elliptical and slotted at D D, the slots being concentric with'the respective pivots B B.

E E are clamp-screws which, after passing through the slots a a'D D, engage with nuts F F, and are then headed up at c e to prevent said screws being disengaged from said nuts.

G G are other screws or headed pins for the attachment of the ordinary straps that pass under the wearers body.

From the above description it is evident that by slackening the screws B B EE the pads O c O 0 can be readily adjusted either toward or away from each other, and after the desired change has been effected said pads are held in place by again tightening said screws. Again, it is apparent that these pads maybe so set as to cause their major axes to be perfectly vertical, as seen in Fig. 1; but said axes can be inclined either to the right or left of a vertical line after the screws E E have been unslackened. Furthermore, either pad can be set independently of the other one, and after a suitable inclination has been obtained the screws E E are again tightened, so as to hold the plates 0 0 immovably in place. Finally, the screws B B not only act as the centers of motion for said plates or pads, but they also serve as pins, to which the ends of the body strap or band are fastened.

I claim as my invention The combination, in a double-truss, of the bar A, having longitudinal-slots a, a, near its ends; the pivot-screws B, B, traversing said slots; the pads O c, O c, pivoted to said bar by said screws B B, and having curved slots D, D, concentric with said pivots; and the clampscrews E, E, that traverse said slots a, D, a, D, and engage with nuts F, F, concealed within said pads, all as herein described, and set forth.
