Nirnn STATES ATENT Fricn,
ADVERTISING-MATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,585, dated December 3, 1895.
Application filed April 6, 1895. Serial No. 544,717 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OHARLEs FREDERICK BURGER, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Advertising Matches, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
In advertising-matches it is customary to send samples of goods to prospective purchasers in order that the said purchasers may examine the said samples to note the character of the match-splints, the character and burning qualities, as well as the color, of the wood or other material of which the splints are made, and the color and size of the matchhead.
A serious difficulty in the way of sending a few samples to the many thousand dealers arises from the fact that the postal authorities forbid the transmission of matches by mail, and to send the samples by express entails a comparatively heavy expense on the advertiser, and, moreover, the express companies object to handling such packages.
The object of my invention is to obviate the above-mentioned difiiculties and provide a simple and inexpensive means of bringing the matches before the would-be purchasers, which I do by making the sample splints of exactly the same quality and color as the splints to be delivered and by forming on the sample splints heads which are of the same size and color as the heads of the splints to be delivered, but which are not ignitible. By so doing the sample splints can be sent freely through the mails, the envelope containing them having on it a notice to the effect that the goods are dummies and that their transmission is authorized by the postal authori ties.
To these ends my invention consists of an advertising device or dummy match, which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a perspective view of a match like the ordinary parlor-match. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a somewhat-different style of match, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a card of matches.
The several views are shown to illustrate clearly the principle of my invention, although the matches illustrated and described appear precisely like any ordinary ignitiblc match.
As shown in Fig. 1, the splint 10 is of the customary kind, the wood of which corresponds precisely with the wood of acertain brand or grade of matches, and the head 11 of the splint looks exactly like the head of the regular goods to be sold by sample; but the head 11 contains nothing which can be ignited, and so the match is a dummy.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but shows how the character of the samples may be varied to correspond with the varying grades or brands of goods; but the splint 10 and head 11 are made on the same principle as already described, but are of a little different size and shape.
Fig. 3 illustrates the application of my invention to a card of matches, the card 12 being split into splints13 of the usual kind, these terminating in tips or heads 14:, which are not ignitible, but which look like the ordinary heads.
It is well known that in the trade much de pends upon the color and quality of the wood, and that the trade is also very particular about the coloring of the heads, and it will be seen that by using the dummy matches referred to the samples serve every purpose of real matches, as the sellers of the matches will guarantee the firing qualities of the heads. It is my intention to send out these dummy matches to the trade in envelopes, on which are printed notices stating clearly that the inclosed samples are dummy-matches and not ignitible and that their transmission is authorized by the postal authorities.
In the foregoing description reference is made chiefly to matches having wood splints; but the splints or sticks of the matches are sometimes made of wax, paper, or other ma terial, and it will of course be understood that my invention applies equally well to such matches, and in using the term splint I mean to cover any ordinary match stick or stem without regard to the material of which it is made.
Having thus described my said invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. As an improved article of manufacture,
Which it represents, but with its head non-igan advertising device comprising a match nitible, substantially as described.
splint having a false head which is not ignitible, substantially as described.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a sample dummy match, having its Wood and head made in simulation of the ordinary goods CHARLES FREDERICK BURGER- lVitnesses W. A. DoWNs, JARED G. BALDWIN, J r.
