To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE M. BROWN- ING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Seals, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a seal which may be applied to any article of commerce, and particularly such articles as are sold and displayed in stores, so that when this seal is applied, it cannot be removed from the article, and cannot be tampered with so as to change the marks there on without changing the seal, so that the tampering` is readily detected, whereby both the owner of the goods and the purchaser are protected.

A further obj ect is to provide a seal which can be readily marked, and properly marked in any desired way prior to sealing, so that it may be in a proper condition before it is attached to an article.

rhese and other object-s are accomplished by my invention, sonic embodiments of which are hereinafter set forth.

For a more particular description of my invention, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, in which- Figure l is a plan view of my improved seal ready for use. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a portion the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of my improved seal when secured in the condition in which it is use-d. 4 is an enlarged sectional view, taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. Fig. shows a part of a modified structure. Throughout the various views of the drawings, similar reference characters designate similar parts.

My improved seal l, is provided with a body 2 and a tang or neck 3 which may be integral therewith, as shown in Figs. l, 3 and 4, or may be made separate therefrom as indicated in Figs. 5 and 6.

The end of the body Q which is remote from the tang 3, is provided with a suitable perforation through which is passed an eyelet t which pivotally secures a shield `5 so that the same may be shifted Over 0r away from the face of the body 2 next this shield 5. At the other end of the shield 5 is a suitable perforation 6 adapted to register with a similar perforation 7 in the body 2, and a third perforation 8 is placed in the enlarged end 9 of the tang 3. When a proper entry has been written on the face of the body 2 next the shield 5, this shield is placed over the body, the tang is then bent until the perforation 8 registers with the perforations G and 7, and then the eyelet l0 may be passed through the same and swaged or secured in the usual manner, as shown in Fig. 4.

1n the structures shown in Figs. 5 and 6 the tang 8 is provided with two heads, one 9 and the other 11, and in the head l1 is placed a perforation l2 corresponding with the perforation 8. lWhen this form of tang is employed, the perforations S and l2 are made to register with the perforations 7 and 6, the same as above described, and all are secured by a common eyelet 10.

My improved seal may be made of any suitable material but is preferably made out of Celluloid, the parts Q and 3 being opaque and the shield 5 being transparent. Any other suitable substance may be substituted, but Celluloid is found satisfactory and gives results that are desired.

it is obvious from the foregoing that when my improved seal is applied to any object, the indications such as trade marks, price, or what-not, are clearly revealed on the seal, exactly as printed or written, and cannot be tampered with, except by destroying the seal, so that both the owner of the goods or the seller, and the purchaser are protected. The customer knows that the marks are genuine and belong to the articles to which they are attached, and the seller knows that the goods, such as clothes, have not been worn or used when sent on approval, or at any other time, either within or without the custody of the seller.

iVhile I have shown and described two embodiments of my invention, it is obvious that it is not restricted thereto,bnt is broad enough to cover all structures that come Within the scope of the annexed claim.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is, l
