COLTER-CLAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,378, dated November 26, 1895.
Application filed August 26, 1895, Serial No. 560,587. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JAMES N. MCOANN and WILLIAM'SCROGGIN, citizens of the United States, residing at Bearden, in the county of Ouachita and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Oolter-Clamp, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to a clamp for securing colters to plow-beams; and the object in view is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device adapted to be applied with facility to a plow-beam to form the means of attachment of a colter-shank, and, furthermore, to provide simple means for adjusting I 5 the colter vertically with relation to the plowbeam and securing the same at the desired adj ustment.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a colter-clamp constructed in accordance with our invention applied in the operative position to a plow. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the clamp. Fig. 3 is a detail view in perspective of the clamp detached. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the upper clamp-plate in the plane of the key.

1 designates a plow-bea1n to which .our im- 3 5 proved colter-clamp is applied, the clamp comprising a lower plate or member 2, which is bolted to the under side of the plow-beam, and an upper plate or member 3, which is bolted to the upper side of the beam, common bolts 4 being employed to secure both plates or members to the beam.
The upper and lower plates or members of the clamp are provided, respectively, with aligned openings 5 for the reception of a colter-shank 6, a corresponding opening 7 being formed in the plow-beam, through which the shank extends, and the upper plate or member is provided with a transverse perforation 8 for the reception of a key 9, said perforation being formed at the rear endof the vertical opening in the plate or member and having one-half of its diameter overlapping the opening, whereby the key when fitted in the perforation projects at one side into the opening to engage one of a series of rounded notches 10, formed in the rear edge of the colter-shank. One end of this key is threaded to engage a threaded portion of the perforation, whereby displacement of the key by j arring is prevented.
The object in employing a key fitted in a transverse perforation, which breaks into and thereby communicates with but does not extend through the opening in which the coltershank is arranged, is to avoid the necessity of perforating the colter-shank and provide for the proper adjustment of theparts by forming notches in the rear edge of the shank. Such notches may be formed, as indicated in the drawings, to secure the proper locking of the colter in the desired position without materially weakening the shank, and in addition to this it will be seen that by employing notches instead of transverse openings or perforations in the shank the key does not bear or resist any of the strain exerted upon the colter. Having described our invention, what We claim is- A colter clamp comprising upper and lower plates or members secured, respectively, to the upper and lower sides of a plow beam by means of common bolts and provided with aligned openings, the upper plate or member being provided with a transverse perforation which is arranged contiguous to and breaks into the rear end of the opening in said plate 5 or member, and a key fitted in said transverse perforation with one side projecting into the opening in the plate or member, said key being threaded to engage a threaded portion of the perforation, in combination with A a colter shank adapted to fitin said aligned our own we have hereto aflixed our signatures openings and provided in its rear edge with in the presence of two Witnesses.
