To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known th at I, CHARLES W. HOWARD, al citizen of the United States,residing at Franklin, in the county of Delawareand State of New York, have invented a new and useful Stanchion, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in stanchions, and has for its object to simplify and improve the construction thereof, so that it will be possible to operate any one of a series of stanchion-bars independently of all the others for confining or releasing one or more animals without disturbing the rest, or to operate all of the stanchion-bars simultaneously for the purpose of releasing all the stock at one and the same time whenever it is desired to turn the same out to pasture or in the event of a re or other emergency.
To this end the invention consists in certain novel features and details of construction and arrangement of parts,as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawings, and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a stanchion-frame, illustrating the application lof the present improvement thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section through the same. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view of one of the automatic locking-catches.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a frame which may be of any suitable or preferred con struction, and which, for convenience, is illustrated as comprising the end uprights 2, a series of intermediate stationary stanchions 3, and upper and lower horizontal Stringer-bars 4, arranged upon opposite sides of the vertically-disposed stationary stanchions and adjacent to the top and bottom ends thereof.
5 designates a series of adjustable stanchions, the lower ends of which are pivoted between the base-stringers 4, and the upper ends of which are free to vibrate within and between the upper stringers 4. 'In order to allowV the pivoted stanchions to be vibrated sufiiciently to one side, the adjacent edges of the adjoining fixed stanchions are inclined or tapered, as indicated at G. The adjustable stanchions are interconnected and adapted to be operated simultaneously by means of a horizontally-disposed slide-bar 7, which res. s upon the top edge of one of the Stringer-bars 4 and is held in place by means of suitable metallic clips 8, secured to the bars 4, forming the top of the stanchion-frame, and looped partially around said slide-bar, so as to form guides in which the latter may slide. Each of the adjustable stanchions is capable of being connected with or disconnected from said slide-bar 4by means of a bail-shaped latch 9, formed, preferably, from a piece of wire or rod having its terminals coiled to form eyes for the reception of a pivotal bolt 10, which also passes through its respective stanchion 5, adjacent to the upper end thereof, as shown. Each of said latches 9 also engages at its central portion an upwardly-opening notch 11 in the upper edge of the slide-bar 7. The slide-bar 7 is moved longitudinally by means of a cam-lever 12, pivoted to the stanchionframe at or near one end of the latter and connected with said slide-bar by means of a pivotal link or connecting bar or rod 13. By Vibrating the lever 12 the slide-bar will thus be moved longitudinally and may be thereby caused to eifect the desired adjustment of the pivoted stanchions.
In order to prevent any accidental displacement of the latches 9 from the notches 11 in the slide-bar,a series of gravity-catches 14 are employed, one pivoted adjacent to each of the notches 11. Each of said catches comprises an upper arm having a hooked extremity or pendent catch-lip 15, and a lower arm 16 approximately of the same length as the upper hooked arm, and each catch further comprises a laterally-projecting stop 17, which normally rests upon the upper edge of the slide-bar 7 and limits the downward movement of said catch. The hooked extremity of the catch 14 rests normally immediately over its respective notch 11 in the slide-bar and in engagement with the latch 9 and effectually prevents the displacement of the latter from its notch, while the lower arm of the catch lies beneath said latch and assists in lifting the same out of the notch when the catch is vibrated upwardly.
From the foregoing description it will be IOO apparent that any one of the catches let may be rocked upon its pivot for releasing the respective pivoted stanchion and enabling the latter to be moved for releasing an animal. At the same time said catch, by reason of its particular construction and arrangementvill prevent the accidental displacement of the stanchion-latch from the slide-bar 7. In this manner one or several animals may be secured or released ,Without disturbing the others. In case of an emergency, or When it is desired to turn the stock out to pasture, by vibrating the operating-lever at one end the slide-bar maybe moved longitudinally, thereby simultaneously moving all of the pivoted stanchions in such manneras to release the animals. lf desired, a locking-pin 1S, having an annular groove 19, may be inserted through horizontally-alignin g openin gs 2O in the upper Stringer-bars 4, so as to lie immediately in rear of each pivoted stanchion for preventing the movement of the same and the consequent release of the animal secured thereby.
Changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing` from the spirit or sacriiicing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination with a stanchion frame, and a horizontally disposed slide bar mounted thereon, of a series of pivoted stanchion bars provided with pivotal bail-shaped latches engaging notches in said slide bar, and an automatic locking catch for each of said latches, all arranged forjoint operation, substantially as described.
2. The combination With a stanchion frame, and a longitudinally adjustable slide bar thereon, of a series of pivoted stanchion bars, a corresponding series of latches pivetally connected With said stanchion bars and in engagement with said slide bar, and a series of automatic locking catches, each comprising an upper hooked arm or portion overlying its respective latch, an arm resting beneath said latch, and a stop for regulating the position of said catch, substantially as specified.
3. The combination With a stanchion frame, and a longitudinally adjustable slide bar thereon, ol' a series of pivoted stanchion bars, a corresponding series of latches pivotally connected with said stanchion bars and in engagement with said slide bar, and a series of automatic locking catches carried by the slide bar and engaging the latches, substantially as speciiied.
