STANCHIONQ SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 772,520, dated October 18, I904.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. KIRK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Camden, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Stanchions, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the present invention is to produce. a simple, durable, and efficient cattlestanchion which may be easily manufactured and which'may be automatically released.

Incarrying out'the invention the stanchion is preferablyformed of angle-iron and supported above and below either by chains or swivels or such other mechanism as may be desired. Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters denote corresponding parts, it will be noted that a frame of ordinary construction is employed, this being here shown as comprising upper and lower horizontal bars A B and uprights a a a, connecting the same. The

This bar and the flexible connection betweenthe latch'E and the operating-rodF are so arranged as that when the stanchion is closed said chain will be protected against accidental operation by the horns of the animal confined by the stanchion, as indicated in Fig. 1.
As will easily be seen, the stanchion may readily be closed and locked in such closed position by means of the latch mechanism above described. To open the same or any number of such stanchions which may be employed, it is only necessary to move the operating-rod F to the right. This movement of the rod through the connecting-chains 0 trips each latch E, freeing the same from engagement with the tongue 6 and moving the member (Z of the stanchion or permitting the same to move sufiiciently far to the right to open the stanchion to the position shown in Fig. 2.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. The combination with a suitable frame, of a stanchion movably supported therein, said stanchion comprising two members hinged together at their lower ends, the upper end of one of said members being provided with a tongue and the upper end of the other member being provided with a latch coacting therewith and an extension adjacent to said latch and coacting with said latch to prevent accidental displacement thereof, an actuating-rod, and a connection between the same and said latch, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a frame, of astanchion movably supported therein, said stanchion being formed of angle-iron and comprising two members hinged together attheir lower ends, the web of such angle-iron adjacent to the upper end of one of said members being cut away and such end provided with a tongue, and the upper end of the other of said members being flattened out and provided with a latch coacting with said tongue, an extension on said last-named member adjacent to said latch and coacting therewith to prevent accidental displacement thereof, and
means for operating said latch, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with aframe, of a stanchion movably supported therein, said stanchion being formed of angle-iron and comprising two members hinged together at their lower ends, the web of such angle-iron adjacent to the upper end of one of said members being cut away and such end provided with a tongue, the upper end of the other of said members being flattened out and provided with a latch coacting with said tongue, an extension adjacent to said latch and coacting therewith to prevent accidental displacement thereof, a movable operating-rod, and a connection between the same and said latch, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination with a frame. of a stanchion movably supported therein and comprising two members hinged together at their lower ends, a latch for connecting said members near their upper ends, a rod, a connection between the same and said latch, and a guard for said connection, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination with a frame, of a stanchion movably supported therein, said stanchion being formed of angle-iron and comprising two members hinged together at their lower ends, the web adjacent to the upper end of one of said members being cut away and such member provided with a tongue, the 11p per end of the other member being flattened out and provided with a latch, an operatingrod, a flexible connection between the same and said latch, and a guard for said connection, the same being secured to the upperfiattened end of that member of the stanchion carrying the latch, substantially as set forth.
