To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HIRAM TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Columbiana'and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oattle-Stanchions; and I do hereby declare that the following is a,

full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawin gs, making a part of this specification, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, in which I Figure l is a view showing the stanchion open. Fig. 2 is a view showing the stanchion closed. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of one of the stanchion-bars. Fig. 4. is a detached view of the catch-spring. Fig. 5 is adetached view of the pivoted latch. Fig. 6 is a detached view of the spring and latch-holding bar. Fig. 7 is a view showing the latch and latch-holding bar, also showing a portion of the stanchion-bar proper, illustrating the upper part of said bar. Fig. 8 is a view showing the bottom or lower end of the pivoted stanchion-bar, showing the same properly pivoted and its adjacent bar.

The present invention has relation to eattle-stanchions and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

Similar numbers indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

In the accompanyingdrawings,1 represents the upper beam or bar, which may be located in the ordinary position and supported at any desired height.

2 represents the bottom or lower timber or sill, to which are attached suitable uprights, such'as 3, the number of uprights corresponding with the number of stalls designed to be constructed.

Thestanchion properconsists of the two bars 4. and 5, the bar 4. being suspended from the beam 1 by means of the link 6 and the S- shaped hook 7. The bottom or lower end of the bar at is held in proper position by means of the link 8 and the Sshaped hook 9, said parts being located and arranged substantially as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. The bar 4 is provided with the integral lateral parts or portions 10 and 11, which parts are formed by bending a portion of the bar 4. so as to produce the lateral portions 10 and 11. To the lateral portions 11 are securely attached, by means of rivets or bolts, the bars or connecting-

12 and 13, the connecting-plate 13 being provided with the downwardextended portion 14, which is provided with the eye 15,

said eye being for the purpose of connecting the S-shaped hook 9, as illustratedin Fig. 8. To the connecting-

plates

12 and 13 is pivotally attached the stanchion-bar 5, said stanchion-liar being provided with the lateral portion 16.

It will be understood that by my peculiar manner of pivoting the bar 5 the joint will be located at about the perpendicular center of the stanchion proper, by which arrangement the pivoted stanchion-bar 5 will fall to an an gle by gravity.

To the top or upper side of the lateral arm or part 10 is attached the catch-bar l7,which catch-bar is substantially of the form shown and is provided with the cars 18, which ears are for the purpose of providing a means for pivotally connecting the catch 19, said catch being located substantially as shown in Fig. 7." The catch-bar 17 is provided with oppositely-curved arms 20, which arms form a guide for the catch bolt orbar21,which catch bolt or bar is securely attached to the top or upper end of the stanchion-bar 5 and its top or upper end beveled, so that it will lift the catch 19 as it passes under said catch until it has cleared the bar 22, after which said catch is free to fall or. to bepressed downward, as hereinafter described.

For the purpose of insuring a proper connection for the'top or upper end of the stan chionbar 5 when said stanchion -bar is brought into the position illustrated in Fig. 2 the spring 23 is employed, which spring rests upon the shoulder 24: of the catch-bar 17 and is located under the lip 25, formed upon the catch 10.- It will be understood that when the outer end of the catch is elevated the spring will be depressed, and after the catch has been released or the catch-bolt is brought directly under the opening 26 said spring will force the catch downward at its outer end, said catch turning upon the pivot 27.

The stanchion-bars 4i and 5 are formed of angle-iron, preferably L-shaped in cross-section, and are formed of such material for the purpose of producing a bar that will be strong and of small size.

For the purpose of protecting the animal designed to be confined by the stanchion proper the inner faces of the bars 4: and 5 are lined with the Wood strips 28, which wood strips are preferably of the form shown in cross-section, Fig. 3, said strips being properly attached by means of suitable screws or bolts 29.

For the purpose of providing a stanchion that may be rocked axially it is supported by means of the S-shaped hook 7 and the link 6. For the purpose of holding the bottom or lower end of the stanchion in proper position it is secured to the sill 2 or its equivalent by means of the link 8 and the S-shaped hook 9, by which arrangement the stanchion proper is free to rock axially.

For the purpose of unlocking the pivoted bar 5 without coming within reach of said bar or its catch and at the same time providing a means for unlocking or opening a series of stanchions the cord or wire is located above the beam 1 and is held in proper position by means of the eyes 31, through which eyes the cord or wire passes. The cord or wire 30 may extend to any desired point to be operated and may extend so as to be reached from the outside of the building.

To the cord or wire 30 are attached the cords or wires 32, which wires extend down through suitable apertures or openings in the beam 1 and are connected to the catch 19, or, as shown, to the bar 22, which forms a portion of the catch-bar and is formed integral therewith.

It will be understood that any desired number of stanchions can be unlocked by a pull of the cord or wire 30.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of the bar 4 and the bar 5, said bar 5 hinged to the bar 4 and each of said bars bent or curved at their bottom or lower ends, and provided with the Wood strips 28, means for suspending and holding the bars 4': and 5, the catch-bar 17 secured to the lateral arm or part 10 and provided with the cars 18, the catch 19 located upon the bar17, the catch bolt or bar 21 attached to the top or upper end of the bar 5, the spring 23, the wire or cord 30 located above the stanchion proper and the wires or cords 32 located and arranged as described, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
