COW STANCHION AND STALL.

To all 207mm it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN L. Mononunorn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kewaskum, in the county of Washington and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Cow Stanchion and Stall, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a stanchion and the invention aims, primarily, to provide novel means for controlling the movement of a pivoted shackle which constitutes a part of the stanchion.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel means whereby the stanchion may be moved to and fro, longitudinally of the stall and in a horizontal direction, to position animals of different sizes properly both with respect to the feed box and to the drain at the rear of the stall.
It is within the scope of the invention to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 shows in elevation, a device constructed in accordance with the present invention, parts being broken away; Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a fragmental vertical section illustrating the upper portion of the stanchion.
In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the floor of a stall or stable. the same supporting an upright, U- shaped frame 2 including a bottom tie bar 3 connecting opposed portions of the frame. Horizontally disposed yokes 1 are provided, the yokes 1 being attached to the side portions of the frame 2 by means of caps .5. The arms of the yokes 4 are connected by bars 6 having openings 7 receiving securing elements 8 mounted in the ends of a combined guide and stanchion support 9 having a longitudinal slot 10. so that intermediate its ends, the slot 10 is enlarged or broadened in width. Projecting downwardly and laterally from the guide 9 and constituting a part thereof is an angular arm 12.
The stanchion proper includes a body comprising a bottom member 14 and a top member 15, the latter being of hollow or tubular construction. The elements 14; and 15 of the body of the stanchion are connected by a post 16 and by a brace 17. By means of an upper swivel 18, the top member 15 is connected with the arm 12. Attached to the bottom member 14 of the body portion of the stanchion is a lower swivel 19 mounted slidably on a rod 20, terminally held in the ends of a U-shaped bracket 21 which is attached to the tie bar portion 3 of the frame 2.
The stanchion includes a shackle bar 22 pivoted as indicated at 28 to one end of the bottom member 14 of the stanchion. Secured to the upper end of the shackle bar 22 is atubular, transverse head 21 adapted to cot' perate with one end of the top memher 15 of the body of the stanchion when the shackle is in a closed position. A latch 25 is fulcrumed intermediate its ends as shown at 26 on the head 2 and extends at one end into the top member 15. On one end of the latch 25 there is formed a beveled finger 27 adapted to hook over a pin or projection 28 extended transverselv of the top member 15 and located within the same. The finger 27 is maintained in a position to engage with the projection 28, by a resilient means of some sort, such as a compression spring 29 interposed between one end of the latch and the head 24.
An angular releasing lever 30 is fulcrumed intermediate its ends as shown at 81 upon the head 24: of the shackle 22, one arm of the releasing lever 30 extending within the head and the other arm of the releasing lever projecting upwardly and extending out of the head. The releasing lever 30 is of? set as shown at 82 so that the upper end of the releasing lever is alined vertically with the swivel 18. Upon the upper end of the releasing lever 30 is formed a shoul der 33.
The means for operating the releasing member 30 includes an arm 34- having at its lower end an eye 35 inclosing the upper end of the releasing member 30 and mounted to slide on the guide 9. The upper end of the tions of the frame 2.
In practical operation, the stanchion may be adjusted horizontally and transversely of the plane defined by the frame 2 by engaging the securing elements 8 in the holes 7 of the bars 6, the lower swivel 19 being slidable along the rod 20 which is supported on the upright portions of the U-shaped bracket 21. By the operation above de scribed, the stanchion may be moved toward and away from the feed box and the drain at the rear of the stall, thereby to accommodate animals of different sizes.
Let it be supposed that the parts are in the same positions shown in Fig. 1. and that it is desired to unlatch the shackle bar 22. Then the upper end of the lever 41 is moved in the direction of the arrow A, the bar 37 being moved in a corresponding direction and the arm 34 being carried in the directionof'the arrow A along with the bar 37, the lower end of the arm 34: riding on the upper edge of the guide 9. When the arm 34 isthus carried to the right, the eye 35 on the arm will engage with the upper end of the releasing lever 30 and tilt the same on its fulcrum 3 1. The releasinglever 30 will tilt the latch 25 on its fulcrum 26 and disengage the finger 27 from the projection 28. After this portion of the operation has been carried out, continued movement of the bar 37 in the direction of the arrow A will serve to swingthe shackle bar 22 into the open position shown in dotted lines in moved to a closed position by swinging the upper end of the lever 41 in the direction of the arrow B.
The upper end of the releasing lever 30 slides in the slot 10 of the guide 9 and comparing Fig. 2 with Fig. 1 it will be obvious that when the shackle 22 is open, the stanchion cannot rotate upon its pivotal mountings 1819. When, however, the shackle bar 22 is swung to a closed position, the upper end of the releasing lever30 lies in the enlarged portion ofthe slot 10 formed at 11. Since this enlarged portion indicated at 11 is alined vertically with the supporting swivel 18, the upper end of the releasing lever 30 will be permitted to rotate and the stanchion may be rotated also.
The fun'ction of the shoulder 33 on the releasing lever 30 is to prevent. the eye 35 of the arm 34 from slipping off the upper The shackle bar 22, obviously is end of the releasing lever when the bar 37 is moved in the direction of the arrow B to close the shackle bar 22.
It is to be understood of course that the bar 37 may be employed for actuating a plurality of the structures hereinbefore described. I
At times it may be desirable to release the shackle bars 22 on some of the stanchions, and to leave the shackle bars of the remaining stanchions in closed positions. WVhen it is desired that the shackle bar 22 of any stanchion shall remain in a closed position, the arm 3% which is peculiar to'that stanchion is swung upwardly and is held by the hook 39, so that the eye 35no longer co operates with the upper end of the releasin member 30. Then, when the bar 37 is moved in the direction of the arrow A, the shackle bars 22 of those stanchions the arms 34 of which are uplifted and held by the hooks 39, will remain in closed positions.
To the side portion of the frame 2 of one stanchion may be applied a cap 100 held to a socket 101 by means of bolts 102 or the like, the socket 101 constituting a part an arm 103 adapted to slide for adjustment on an arm 104: similarly connected to the side portion of the frame of an adjoining stanchion. Through the slidable overlapped ends of the arms 103 and 104 is passed a U-bolt 105 carrying nuts 10.0. Through the U-bolt 105 passes the upper end of a spacing rail 107, the lower end of which is at tached to the floor of the stall. The U-bolt 105 exercises a double function in that it serves at once to hold the upper end of the spacing rail 107 in place and serves, also, to prevent relative sliding movement vbetween the arms 103 and 104.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is: I a

. releasing member movable on the shackle and engaging the latch-, the latch being movable independently of the releasing member to interlock with the body; and means for actuating the releasing member. v 2. In a device of the class described, a frame: a guide thereon; a stanchion including a body and a pivoted shackle cotiperating with the body. the body being attached to the guide and the frame; a latch movable upon the shackle and coiiperatin'g with the body to hold the shackle closed; and areleasing member movably mounted on the shackle and coiiperating with the latch, the releasing member being slidable in the guide. 7
3. In a device of the class described, a
frame; a guide on the frame and provided with a slot including a restricted portion and an enlarged portion; a stanchion including a body and a shackle pivoted thereto, the body being pivoted to the guide and the frame; a latch on the shackle and c0- operating With the body; and a releasing member for the latch and mounted on the shackle, the releasing member being received in the slot, the restricted portion of 1 i the slot cooperating with the releasing memoer when the shackle is open, to prevent the stanchion from rotating, the releasing memher being rotatable in the enlarged portion of the slot when the shackle is closed, to permit the stanchion to rotate.

In a device of the class described, a frame; a guide thereon; a stanchion including a body and a pivoted shackle, the body being attached to the frame and the guide; locking mechanism on the stanchion and cooperating With the body and the shackle to hold the shackle closed, a portion of the locking mechanism being slid able in the guide; a movable actuating memher; and an arm pivoted to the actuating member and supported by the guide, the
arm engaging said portion of the locking mechanism to actuate the same to unlock the shackle; and means on the movable actuating member for engaging the arm, to hold the arm out of engagement with said portion of the locking mechanism.
5. In a device of the class described, a stanchion including a body and a pivoted shackle cooperating With the body; locking mechanism engaging the body and the shackle to hold the shackle closed; a movably mounted actuating member; a rigid arm pivoted on the actuating member and engaging a portion of the locking mechanism detachably; and a device on the actuating member for holding the arm out of engagement with the locking mechanism to permit the actuating member to be moved Without releasing the locking mechanism.
