ABRAM F. STERNE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO LEVI, WECHSLER &

SHIRT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 549,546, dated November 12, 1895.
Application filed April 16, 1894. Serial No. 507,631. (No model.)
- 1 erly and which will not readilybecome broken or rumpled. i
To this end my invention consists in the construction hereinafter set forth and claimed.
My invention will be understood by refer- I once to the accompanying drawings,for1ning part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a face view of a shirt-bosom embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 is a section thereof on line 2 2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow.
In the drawings, a indicates the neck-band, and b the bosom, of the shirt. This bosom is of the type known as an open shirt-bosomthat is to say, it consists of two sections,
2 5 whose edges form a placket. This bosom is of greater thickness at its middle portion than at its edge, and has at its outer edges a break 0, so-called, which surrounds the entire bosom and is composed of fewer plies or thicknesses than the middle portion of the bosom.
Referring particularly to Fig. 2, it will be seen that the bosom consists of two sections, each of which sections is built up in the middle portion 1) of the bosom of the two external plies d cl, consisting of a strip or section of fabric doubled as shown and internal plies e 6, consisting of a strip or section of fabric extending from the center of the bosom to within a short distance of the edge thereof, leaving all around the bosom the edges of the two external plies or thicknesses d d, as shown, forming the break 0. This doubled section 6 e is secured to the inner ply d of the bosom by rows of stitches a: 00, which row of stitches is concealed by the outer or exposed ply d, as will clearly appear from an inspection of Fig. 2. The plies d d are attached by their edges to the main body of the shirt f by stitches y y. It will be observed that the stitches which hold the plies together and which secure the bosom to the main body of the shirt are wholly at or near the edge of the bosom and that there are no stitches along the edges of the placket of the bosom.
The particular advantage of my structure 5 5 consists in the fact that the break or edge 0, being of less stiffness than the center of the bosom, can be bent or broken much easier than the center, and will thus relieve the strain on the center and prevent the same from breaking.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- As a new article of manufacture, a shirt comprising a shirt bosom consisting of two sec tions, each section having the portion thereof which lies at the middle portion of the bosom composed of external plies d d of the same extent throughout and comprising a strip of fabric doubled upon itself, internal plies e e comprising a doubled strip of fabric between the plies dd extending from the middle of the bosom to within a short distance of the edge thereof, the edges of the said doubled sections forming the edges of the placket and 7 5 being unstitched, the said plies 6 being secured to the inner ply d by stitches a; which pass through the said plies e and d only, and a body portion secured to the edges of said external plies d d of the bosom by stitches y, so as to constitute a shirt bosom which will be of less thickness near the edge than at the middle portion, all of said stitches being at or near the edge of the bosom so as to leave the body of the bosom free from stitches.
