IVALLAOE F. KIRK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SOAP-PACKAG E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 549,371, dated November 5, 1895.
Application filed August 14, 1895- Serial No. 559,216. (No specimens.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALLACE F. KIRK, a citizen of the United States, residing in Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Soap-Packages, of which the following is a specification.
It is customary in soap factories where laundry or family soap is manufactured to incase the cakes of the soap in paper wrappers and pack them in boxes. The wrappers are only used as temporary coverings while the soap remains in the hands of the jobber or grocery-man and are removed before the cakes are used. This packing is usually done before the soap has become thoroughly dry, and consequently the cakes go through a drying or sweating process after being packed, in which the wrappers are apt to become discolored, so as to render them unsightly and injure the salability of the soap. To prevent this discoloration during the sweating, as well as to obviate any tendency to mold, is the object of my invention, and I accomplish it by forming openings in the wrapper, through which the air may have access to the surface of the cake and be enabled to facilitate the drying process which the soap naturally undergoes for some considerable time after it leaves the factory.
In the accompanying drawings I show at Figure 1 a perspective view of a cake of soap incased in one of my improved wrappers. Fig. 2 shows the wrapper extended in the flat. Fig. 3 is an exaggerated partial section of one kind of wrapper which may be used in my invention.
In said drawings, A represents a cake of soap, and B represents the wrapper in which it is incased. This wrapper is usually printed with the name of the manufacturer, the name of the soap, trade marks, &c., and such printed matter is usually placed in the panels or spaces 0; but my invention is, of course, wholly independent of the printed matter, and hence its particular location or character is wholly immaterial.
At intervals throughout the sheet B perforations or openings 7) are made in such manner and so located as to give the air access to the surface of the soap, and preferably upon all sides. These openings allow the drying out of the soap without producing mold in the cake or material discoloration of the wrapper. The wrapper is not injuriously weakened by the openings, nor is its appearance affected unfavorably thereby.
The invention may be used with paper which has been paraffined or otherwise coated to prevent it from absorbing the moisture or being discolored thereby, equally with paper which has not been so coated. An instance of the coated paper is shown at Fig. 3, where d indicates the protectingmaterial.
- The wrappers are usually applied by simply folding them around the cakes without V in any way securing the edges against unfolding, and they completely inclose the cakes.
I claim A cake of laundry or family soap having a temporary wrapper completely covering it, said wrapper being loosely folded around the cake and being provided with permanently open perforations adapted to give the air free access to the cake and thus prevent discoloration of the wrapper during the sweating, substantially as specified.
