My invention relates to packing, shipping and display boxes and has to do particularly with cardboard, or similar, boxes of this character.

One of the objects of my invention is to provide a novel means for securely fastening the box walls in their box-closing position and which is of such character that the walls may be easily and quickly unfastened and'movecl to an open position without injuring the walls or other parts of the box.

Another object is to effect the detachable fastening of one wall to another wall by ap plying at intervals to either of the surfaces to be. attached a substance which will repel glue, or other adhesive substance, leavlng raw adhesive spaces between the repelling spaces whereby when the glue, or other adhesive substance, is applied to either or both of the surfaces to be attached such surfaces will be fastened together only at spaced intervals. ThlS -arrangement, while securely fastening the walls in closed position, permits them to be readily unfastened by passing an ob ect between the attached'wall surfaces successively breaking the connected spots apart. In carrying out the foregoing object, any composition having an oil base and which may be aplied to the box surface,.such as printers ink, parafiin, etc., may well serve as the repelling substance. With particular reference to the form of box shown inthe drawing, it may be formed perspective view, partially in I of cardboard, or other similar material, from a single blank cut and creased alon fold lines as shown in Fig. 2. More speci cally, this particular box blank comprises a box bottom portion 10 having end Walls 11, rear wall 12 and front wall 13 connected thereto along the respective fold lines 11', '12, and 13. 14 and 15, respectively. All of these walls and flaps are adapted to be folded to the positions clearly indicated in Fig. 1 to receive and confine the articles to be shipped and/or displayed. It

This is such a position as the top covering wall 16 may assume when the box is used for display purposes; and, in that event, the detached front cover flap 19 may be disposed at the rear of the box between the inner surface of the rear wall and the articles in the box for holding the cover in that position, as will be well understood.

In boxes of this character which are used for both shipping and display purposes, it is very important in some instances that the top wall be tightly fastened upon the box during shipment and that the form of .connection be such that it may be readily and quickly broken without injuring the box and destroying its usefulness for display purposes. The important feature of my invention is the provision for the foregoing desirable arrangement. More specifically, an adhesive-repelling substance is applied at intervals to the surface of the top wall flap 19 alon its outer edge, this surface'being that whic is adapted to lie next to the inner surface of the box front wall 13 when this wall flap is attached thereto. Such repelling substance is indicated at 23 in the drawing. Raw, untreated and adhesive spaces 24 are thus provided at intervals to provide a spotfastening means. The repelling substance may take various forms. I have found that rinters ink, paraffin, or other substances aving an oil base, serve this purpose exceedingly well. In some instances spirit varnish may be used. It is well known that various forms of boxes used for shipping and packing purposes are subjected to paraflin treatment and in boxes of that kind, the paraffin treatment may be readily emitted at intervals along the surface of the cover which is to be attached. For example, in the form of box shown in the drawing, the parafiin may be omitted at the points indicated by the numeral 24, namely, at the spots between repelling surfaces 23. Also, there are many forms of boxes having advertising matter printed on the outer surface thereof in which cases the printing ink may serve as the repelling substance, it being applied at the places indicated at 23 in the drawing. In some cases the entire box surface is colored by applying ink thereto, and in such cases, the ink may be omitted at intervals along the surface of the wall to be attached, as in the case of the paraflin, so that blank, raw, untreated surfaces, such as indicated at 24 in the drawing, are provided. Although I have shown and described the adhesive-repelling substance as applied to the top wall flap, it is to be understood that it may also be applied to the surface of the other box wall to which the flap, or other part, is to be fastened without departing from my invention.

In further carrying out my invention, the glue or other suitable adhesive material, is preferably applied continuously along the surface which has been treated with the adhesive-repelling substance and in the form shown this adhesive material is applied to the portion of the top wall flap indicated generally at 19 (Fig. 2). In view of the fact that the treated spaces 23 on the cover flap repel the glue substance, no adherence will take place at those points, the adherence being only at the raw, untreated spots or spaces 24 between the spaces 23. Thus, when the box blank isset up or partially set up and the top wall to be attached is moved to its attachment position against the other wall surface, with the glue, or other similar substance, applied as above described, the top wall flap 19 will be secured to the inner surface of the front wall 13 only at the intervals indicated by the raw, untreated spaces 24 thereby providing a spot-glue fastening arrangement. While this arrangement is such as to securely fasten these parts together against separation under normal conditions, it will be appreciated that they ma be readily separated by passing an object a ong the glued surfaces between the front wall 13 and the flap 19 so as to successively break the fastened spots loose. To break the fastened surfaces apart, an object may by inserted between the box front wall lip 26 and the flap 19 and into the flap opening 25 and it may be then moved laterally along the spot-glued surface to free the top wall as above mentioned. This not only permits this wall to be loosened very readily and quickly, but it'also avoids injuring of any of the exposed surfaces of. the box whereby, when the box is opened, it may then be used for display purposes as above set forth.

It will be appreciated-that while I have chosen one particular form of box for illustrating my invention, it maywell be adapted to many other forms of boxes where similar results are desired. My invention may be employed for joining any two of the walls toget er regardless whether such walls' have fastening flaps. The Walls may be joined together before the blank is entirely set up in which case the box may be filled by inserting the articles therein through one of the ends as is done at times in the use of a box such as that shown. My invention is equally well adapted for closing a box of any form having a cover or other wall which is to be fastened in its closed position after the articles have been packed therein. .Furthermore, while I have shown a certain relationship between the adhesive and non-adhesive surfaces, yet such relation and the arrangement of such surfaces may be varied without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as defined by the claims which follow.

I claim:

1. In a paper box, a covering 'part supported by one wall surface, an extension carried by said part adapted to be attached to another wall surface, said extension having a portion intermediate its ends cut away, a

2. In a paper carton, a plurality {of side walls, a cover supported by the upper edge of one of said side walls, a flap on the edge of said cover opposite its supported edge, said flap having a central cut-out, spot-adhesivefastening means on said flap on the opposite sides of said cut-out for fastening the cover to another of said sidewalls, said latter side wall having an edge extension opposite said cut-out for concealing the latter and for leaving a slit between the flap and latter side wall for the insertion and lateral movement of an object along the spot-adhesive-fastening means to open the cover.

3. In a paper carton, a plurality of side walls, a cover supported by the upper edge of one of said side walls, a flap on the edge of said cover opposite its supported edge,

said flap having a central cut-out, an adhesive-repelling substance applied at intervals along the free edge of said fiap'on the opposite sides only of said cut-out and an adhesive substance applied along said flap over said adhesive-repelling substance for fastening thecover to another of said side walls, said latter side wall having an edge extension opposite said cut-out for concealing the latter in the closed position of the cover and for v leaving a slit between the flap and latter side wall for the insertion and lateral movementof an object along the flap-fastened surface to open the cover. 4. In a blank for a paper carton, a single piece of materialcreased' to provide sections which when folded constitute aplurality of walls and flaps, the outer ofwhich are a fastening flap anda side wall, said flap section having a central cut-out, adhesive-repelling means disposed at intervals along the free edge surface of said flap on the opposite sides of said cut-out, anadhesive substance applied along and over said last-mentioned flap 05 5. 6. In a paper box, a cover wall-having a free edge surface when said cover is unattached, another wall surface to which said edge surface on said cover wall is glued to hold the cover wall in its closed position, the portion of said cover wall edge surface to be attached to said latter wall surface having an adhesive resisting substance applied thereto along spaced areas and also having adhesive applied thereto over an area overlapping and intermediate said glue resisting areas whereby said adhesive causes adherence only over spaced areas between the adhesive resisting areas,the free edge of said latter wall surface being entirely unsecured to said cover wall edge surface at least along portions thereof adjacent said adhesive resisting areas whereby separation of said wall surfaces is facilitated.

7. In a paper box, wall sections providing overlapping edge portions adapted to be glued together,'the edge portion on one of said wall sections having-an adhesive resisting substance applied thereto along spaced areas and also having. adhesive applied theremy name.
