To all 'whom it may concern:
B e it known that we, JAMES D. REIF- sNYDnR and WILLIAM A. WEIGHTMAN, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sealed Wrapped Packages, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a sealed wrapped box or package in which the covering blank or wrapper completely envelops and is adherently attached to all of lthe eX- terior walls 0f the package thereby efficiently sealing the latter so as to protect the contents or merchandise from dust, vermin and foreign' matter, and to render it impossible to tamper with the co-ntents of the package without destroying or injuring the wrapper.
In the present instance the wrapper blank which is intended to be adherently attached to and completely envelop the package on all sides is of a minimum size, in that its entire area is but little more than the sum of the area of all of the walls of the package to be wrapped, and is so shaped as to be capable ofbeing economically and conveniently applied to the package with a minimum expenditure of time, labor and effort.
Furthermore, the wrapper in the present instance is of such form as to render it peculiarly adapted for application to the package or carton through the agency of an automatic wrapping machine, which is a manifest feature ofv advantage in that there are many forms of wrappers which, while capa'- ble of application by hand, are incapable of beneficial application by any of the well known forms of wrapping machines with which we are acquainted.
It is also our purpose to provide a sealed wrapped package, wherein evident economy may be attainedin the process of manufacturing the blank, as well as in the amount of material used, as the process of cutting the blank is exceedingly simple and the wastage of stock in the cutting operation is reduced to such an extent as to be almost negative.
Another object of the invention is to provide a sealed wrapped package wherein the wrapper is so constructed as t0 provide, when applied to the package, a pair of end flaps which may be suitably printed or marked, to
constitute combined labels and seals for the* ends of the package, these end lflaps or labels being preferably of substantially the same area as the ends of the carton or package.
Furthermore, we propose to provide a sealed wjrapped package which when completely wrapped, is not only effectively sealed of a similar nature in view, our invention n consists in the con-struction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure l is a perspective view of the blank or wrapper before folding the same about the package, a package being conventionally illustrated as being Vready to be placed upon the wrapper.
Figs. 2, 3, et, 5 and 6 are perspective views showing the package and wrapper at various stages of the wrapping operation.
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the completely wrapped package made in accordance-with the present invention.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, A indicates the `blank or wrapper, as an entirety, and which isintended to be used as a wrapper or cover for the package B. This wrapper is preferably made of paper or 'other readily foldable material, and is cut in one piece substantially in the form shown in Fig. 1. Referring to said figure, it will be seen that this preferred form of blank embraces four integrally united sections indicated by the numerals 1 2, 3 and 4;; these sections being to all intents and purposes of the exact di* mensions of the respective walls of the box, and they are intended to overlie and cover when the wrapper is adherently applied. For instance, the section l which may be termed the body portion of the wrapper may beemployed to overlie and cover the bottom of the package, while the section 2 forms a side wing to overlie and cover one side of the package, and likewise the section 3 constitutes a side wing to overlie and cover the opposite side of the package from that covered by the section 2, while the section 4L may be used to cover the top of the package. These four sections, as stated, are
preferably of the'exact dimensions of the surfaces of the packagey they are intended tojcover.` One ofV these integrally united V'sections of the wrapper, in the present inently attached and to cover. Vhile we have shown these'y endflaps or label'sections 5 as located kat the'e'nds of the top sections of the blank, .it is to vbe understood, of course, that they may be located at the end of any oneof the other sections of the blank, that is to say, sections 1', 2 or 3. 1n the present form of blank each of the sections 1, 2 and 3 ig provided with a pair of end laps 6, while the section 2 has further formed integral therewith a longitudinal marginal edge strip 7, which may or may not be provided with the end laps 8, although in the present instance we 'have shown such end laps. 1n the process of manufacture, the blank is also cut with a. series of V-sha-ped or approximately V-shaped `notches 9, arranged in pairs and which constitute angular corner gaps when the wrapper is applied to the box so that the various portions of the wrapper will 'lie perfectly flat and there will be no doubling er folding ofthe paper wrapper,at the corners.
lVhen it is vdesired to apply a wrapper blank, such asis shown in Fig. 1, to a package or` cartony one face of the blank is com- Y package or carton, as shown in Fig. 2 'so that they will firmly adhere to the package walls, r1`he laps 6 of the bottom section or body` portion 1 of the wrapper are now folded inward against the ends of the pack-- age as shown in Fig. 3 and the similar end laps 6 of the side sections or wings 2 and 3 are-also folded inward and caused to adhere to the ends of the package, these end laps of the side sections or wings of the wrapper overlying. the end tabs of the bottom section or'body portion as shown in Fig. 4. The longitudinal marginal edge strip 7 is now turned inward and over against the top of the package and caused to adhere thereto, andthe lap's 8 of this strip, when such laps 8 are employed, are folded inward and caused to overlie the end portions of the adjacent-laps 6, as lshown in Fig. 6. Of course suitable pressure is applied to the wrapper during these steps of application to cause such wrapper to adhere firmly, smoothly, tightly and evenly to the carton or package. To complete the covering and sealing of the package it is now only necessary to fold the end flaps or label 'sections 5 inward against the ends of the package, and as these label sections are of substantially the same area as the area of the ends of the package, they will Icompletely' cover the ends of the package and overlie the end laps 6 and S, which have been folded in against the ends of the package at the corners thereof. Then these end flaps or label sections have been caused to adhere to the ends of the package the latter will appear completely wrapped, as shown in Fig. 7. f
It will be noted that but very few steps are required in the wrapping operation, and that there is no surplus of material at the corners or sides which tend to give the wrapper a bulging or distorted appearance, but on the contrary the wrapper when caused to adhere to the package will present an exceedingly smooth, uniform, pleasing and attractive appearance. A feature of advantage, when adherently applied to the walls of the box or package as described, is that the printing for all sides of the package, such as the name of the contents of the package, name and address of the manufacturer, directions, labels, trade-marks, and the like, may be printed upon the wrapper in one operation before it is applied to the box, thus avoiding the use of separate .labels which in ordinary practice are usually ap` plied after the package has been wrapped. Further in connection with this point of advantage as to the printing and marking of the wrapper, we wish to call attention to the fact that inasmuch as the outer faces of the end flaps or label sections 5, are entirely exposed when the wrapper is eompletely applied to the box or package, and as these end fiaps or label sections are of substantially the same area as the ends of the package, they may have labels, directions, trade-marks or other matter printed directly thereon prior to the application of the label to the box, and when the label is finally applied, such printed matter will appear properly positioned at the ends of the box and will not be concealed by overlying flaps, tabs or laps, nor will the printed matter appear as misplaced, due to the failure of the end iiaps or label sections to be properly positioned on the ends of the box, as in the wrapping of the package, as before described, the end labels or fiaps will, due to the form of the blank and the manner of applying the same always fall in their proper positions at the ends of the package.
In the present instance we have shown and described the preferred form of our invention, but it will of course be understood that in certain respects there may be modification and variation without departing from the spirit of the invention or exceeding the scope of the appended claims, and therefore it is to be understood that we do not confine ourselves to all the precise deof construction and location of the parts herein set forth by way of illustration.
What we claim is:
l. As a new article of manufacture, a sealed wrapped package consisting of a box and a one piece wrapper completely enveloping and adherently attached to all of the exterior walls thereof said wrapper comprising integrally united sections folded about and adherently attached to the bottom, sides and top of the box, one of said sections `constituting oneend of the wrapper being of substantially the same dimen sions as the wall of the box to which it is adherently attached and having flaps at its opposite ends overlying and adherently attached tothe ends of the box, said flaps being of substantially the same dimensions as the end walls of the box which they cover.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a sealed wrapped package consisting of a box and a one piece wrapper completely enveloping and adherently attached to all of the exterior walls thereof, said wrapper comprising integrally united sections ad herently attached to the bottom, sides and top of the box, one of said sections being of uniform width throughout and having flaps at its opposite ends and each of the other sections being of uniform length and having at its opposite ends marginal lap portions, said marginal lap portions being adherently attached to the end Walls of the box, the afore-mentioned flaps overlying the said lap portions and being adherently attached to the end walls of the box.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a sealed wrapped package consisting of a box and a one piece wrapper completely enveloping and adherently attached to all of the exterior walls thereof, said wrapper comprising integrally united sections adherently attached respectively to the bottom, sides and top of the box, one of said sections at one end of the wrapper being provided with a longitudinal marginal edge portion adherently attached to a marginal edge of the box, the wrapper section at the opposite end of the blank being of uniform width throughout and having flaps at opposite ends adherently attached to the ends of the box and of substantially the same di mensions as the ends of the box so as to completely cover such box ends, said flaps constituting label sections, certain of said wrapper sections also having end laps adherently attached to the ends of the box and lying beneath and covered by the aforementioned flaps.
4. As a new article of manufacture, a sealed wrapped package consisting of a box and a one-piece wrapper completely enveloping and adherently attached to all of the exterior walls thereof, said wrapper comprising integrally united sections attached respectively to the bottom, sides and top of the box, one of said sections having end flaps at its opposite ends, and each of the other sections having at its opposite ends marginal lap portions, said lap portions being` of less dimensions than the iiaps and adherently attached to the end walls of the box, and the said flaps each being of subn stantially the dimensions of the end walls of the box and overlying and adherently attached to said end walls.
