Morrin ATTORN EYS United States Patent O s Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An overwrapped carton having a tubular body formed from a blank of paperboard cut and 4scored to provide a plurality or" serially connected walls and a thin flexible sheet of lm disposed to extend over certain of the walls and having end portions secured to other walls in such a manner that the attachment of the film to the body is not readily visible and so that the iilm may be readily removed from the body without leaving any traces of the film which are readily visible.

This is a continuation-inpart of our application Ser. No. 579,681, led Sept. 15, 1966 and now abandoned.

This invention relates to an overwrapped carton having a paperboard body and a flexible sheet overwrapping at least one panel of the body, and more particularly, to an improved means for securing the overwrap to the body so that it can be readily removed when desired, without marring the external appearance of the carton body.

Merchandising of products in paperboard cartons has been enhanced in recent years by overwrapping the carton with a display band, or protective band of plastic lm. The overwrap generally is supposed to be removed from the carton before the carton is discarded, so that it should come ott easily and not mar the appearance of the carton. This invention discloses means which not only firmly secure such an overwrap to the carton body, but also permit the overwrap to be torn easily from the carton without marring the external appearance thereof.

Accordingly, an object of this invention is to provide in a carton construction having a sheet overwrap covering the exterior surface of at least one panel of the carton an improved manner of firmly securing the sheet so that it will not be accidentally separated from the carton and so that it will not be wrinkled and unsightly.

Another object of this invention is to provide in an overwrapped carton an improved manner of holding the overwrap, including appropriately located weakened areas in the overwrap, that permit easy complete separation of the overwrap from the carton without damaging the external carton appearance.

Another object of this invention is to provide improved means for holding the overwrap of an overwrapped carton so that after the overwrap is removed, there is virtually no visible trace of the overwrap ever having been on the carton.

These and other objects will be more fully appreciated after referring to the following specification and accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, wherein:

FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of an overwrapped tissue dispensing carton made in accordance with a irst embodiment of the subject invention;

FIGURE 2 is a sectional view as seen generally from line 2-2 of the carton in FIGURE 1;

FIGURE 3 is a top plan view, from the outside of the carton, of a blank suitably cut and scored to form the carton disclosed in FIGURES l and 2;

Referring now to FIGURES 1 3, carton 10 includes a plurality of walls hingedly connected to one another at the side edges thereof and forming thereby a rigid body structure. The body structure is intially formed as a tube from a blank 11 having

12, 14, 16 and 18 hinged together on respective

parallel fold lines

13, 15 and 17 and a lapped connector diap 20 hinged on fold line 19 to side wall panel 18 adapted to underlie and be glued to side wall 12.

Flaps

22, 24, 26 and 28 are hinged to the end edges of the

side wall panels

12, 14, 16 and 18, respectively, and are overlapped and adhesively secured to one another to close the ends of the tubular body along walls 29. A sheet 30 of flexible plastic lm overwraps certain of the body side walls, and is secured at its opposite ends to the end flap 20 and to a body panel along spaced areas of adhesive 32 and 34, respectively.

The FIGURE l carton is suitable for a tissue dispenser and includes an opening 35 formed in the side Wall 16 through which the tissues T can be removed from the carton. The overwrap 30 covers the opening 35 in side wall 16, and further extends over and covers the

adjacent side walls

14 and 18 of the carton. The marginal end edges of the overwrap extend onto tiap 20 and a portion of the side wall panel 12, and are secured in these areas to the blank by

patterns

32 and 34 of adhesive. Lines of

weakness

37 and 38 are formed in the overwrap adjacent the marginal glued end edges thereof to permit easy separation, when desired, of the overwrap from the carton body. The overwrap further is secured at its marginal end edges to the underlying body panel, by means of

opposed strips

40 and 41 of adhesive. This joining of the overwrap to the side wall outwardly of the opening 35, prevents the ingress of dirt or other contamination into the opening.

The carton is formed, as is Well known, by means of underlying flap 20 against the side wall panel 12 to form a tubular structure, and the one marginal edge of the overwrap is conined within this lap joint. The line of weakness 38 is located almost in registry with the fold line 19 between the

adjacent side walls

18 and 12, so that the line of fracture does not show after the intermediate portion of the overwrap has been separated from the carton. Similarly, line of weakness 37 is located so that, when the carton rests on side wall 12, the line of fracture cannot be seen.

If desired, the lines ofweakness can be located slightly outwardly of the removable portion of the sheet covering the

side walls

14, 16 and 18, so that the lines of fracture are actually spaced from the corner juncture of the carton and are therefore completely hidden.

The subject carton is opened by ripping the overwrap from the carton, such as by inserting an object between the overwrap and one of the

side walls

14 or 18 and drawing it along the length of the carton. The

strips

40 and 41 of adhesive are of a readily separable type, when subject to tension, to permit the separation of the overwrap from the carton walls without marring the exterior appearance of the carton. Adhesive suitable for this purpose is known, and commonly has a non-soluble base to give only token adhesion to the blank.

FIGURES 4-6 disclose a body of generally similar construction where like components are identied by the 3 identical numbers used with the FIGURES 1-3 carton except having a prime.

The FIGURES 4-6 carton 10 discloses means for completely hiding both marginal end edges of the overwrap so that there is no visible trace of any overwrap having been on the carton after it has been removed. This carton includes a pair of web panels 4S and 50, hinged on

line

49 and 51 to and between the side Wall panels 12' and 14'. The web panels are folded in face to face relation into the carton in the setup form thereof. The overwrap 30' is adhesively connected to the web panel 50, and the line of weakness 37 is located in approximate registry with the fold line 51. Thus, the secured marginal edge 34 of the overwrap 30' is located inwardly of the body side walls completely hidden from view, so that the overwrap can be torn from the carton body without any visible trace of an overwrap ever having been on the carton.

40 and 41 of adhesive can be provided between the sheet overwrap of whatever underlying side wall panels deemed necessary, depending upon the required overwrap tautness of durability against accidental removal of the particular carton.

We claim:

1. An overwrapped carton comprising the combination of:

(a) a tubular body formed from a blank of paperboard cut, scored, and folded to provide a plurality of side walls hinged together along parallel fold lines, and a narrow ap at one end of the blank hinged along one such fold line from a first side wall and underlying and being secured relative to a last side wall at the opposite end of the blank;

(b) flap means for closing the ends of the tubular body;

(c) a thin eXible sheet of overwrap material having a major portion overlying and having opposite end portions extending beyond all of the side walls except said last side wall;

(d) one end portion of said sheet being interposed between and secured to the narrow flap and a marginal portion of said last side wall, and the opposite end portion of the sheet being secured to another marginal portion of said last side wall;

y(e) said opposite end portions of said sheet being secured to said narrow flap and said last side wall along narrow strips of adhesive;

(f) said sheet having formed therein lines of weakness extending in a direction parallel to and in approximate registry with the fold lines adjacent marginal portions of said last side wall, operable thereby to permit the major portion of said sheet to be torn along said lines of weakness and removed from the carton while providing that said one end portion of the sheet is hidden between said narrow flap and said last side wall whereby the carton appearance is not damaged.

2. An overwrapped carton comprising the combination of:

(a) a tubular body formed from a blank of paperboard cut, scored, and folded to provide a plurality of side walls hinged together along parallel fold lines, and a narrow flap at one end of the blank hinged along one such fold line from a rst side wall and being secured relative to a last side wall at the opposite end of the blank;

(b) ap means for closing the ends of the tubular body;

(c) a thin flexible sheet of overwrap material having a major portion overlying and having opposite end portions extending beyond all of the side walls except said last side wall;

(d) one end portion of said sheet being interposed between and secured relative to the narrow flap and a marginal portion of the last side wall, and the opposite end portion of the sheet being secured relative to another marginal portion of said last side wall;

(e) said sheet having formed therein lines of weakness extending in a direction parallel to and in approximate registry, respectively, with the fold lines adjacent said last side wall and disposed immediately adjacent said last side wall marginal portions operable thereby to permit the major portion of said sheet to be torn along said lines and removed from the carton whereby the carton appearance is not damaged.

3. An overwrapped carton comprising the combination of:

(a) a tubular body formed from a blank of paperboard cut, scored, and folded to provide a plurality of side walls hinged together along parallel fold lines, and a narrow fiap at one end of the blank hinged along one such fold line from a first side wall and underlying and being secured relative to a last side wall at the opposite end of the blank;

(b) tiap means for closing the ends of the tubular lbody;

(d) one end portion of said sheet being interposed between and secured to said narrow flap and a marginal portion -of said last side wall, and the opposite end portion of the sheet being secured relative to another marginal portion of said last side wall;

(e) said last side wall and another side wall hinged thereto adjacent said marginal portion thereof having interposed therebetween a pair of web panels hinged, respectively, to these side walls and to each other and folded in face to face relationship into the interior of the carton;

(f) said opposite end portion of the sheet being interposed between and secured to said web panels;

(g) said sheet having formed therein lines of weakness extending in a direction parallel to and in approximate registry, respectively, with the fold lines adjacent said last side wall and disposed immediately adjacent said marginal portions of said last side wall operable thereby to permit the major portion of said sheet to be torn along said lines and removed from the 'carton whereby the carton appearance is not damaged.

4. An overwrapped carton comprising the combination of:

(a) a tubular body formed from a 4blank of paperboard cut, scored, and folded to provide a plurality of side walls hinged together along parallel fold lines, and a narrow ap at one end of the blank hinged along one such fold line from a first side wall and being secured relative to a last side wall at the opposite end of the blank;

(b) ap means for closing the ends of the tubular body;

(c) a thin flexible sheet of overlap material having a major portion overlying and having opposite end portions extending beyond the first side wall and a second side wall adjacent said first side wall;

(d) one end portion of said sheet being interposed between and secured relative to the narrow flap and a marginal portion of the last side wall, and the opposite end portion of the sheet being secured relative to a marginal portion of a side wall other than the first or second side wall;
