SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 548,380, dated October 22, 1 95, Application Ana Decemberl 1893. smart. 494,045. (roman) To a whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, STEPHEN T. Monrrrr, of Hoflitts Mills, county of Randolph, State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Single or Double Trees, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

The object of my invention is to produce an improvement in single or double trees by which the strength and durability of the article are materially increased and by which the irons may be fitted or adjusted without intervention of a skilled mechanic.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of one of my singletrees. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof. Fig.3 is a horizontal section of the same.

Referring to the figures on the drawings, 1 indicates the body of the singletree, which may be made of any suitable material-as, for example, good hard seasoned wood. It is provided on opposite ends with caps or end pieces 2, upon one side of which are braceribs 3 and upon the other side tug-loops 4. The tug-loops are preferably provided with a round perforation 5 and a slot 6, opening into the same. The ends of the tug-loops are bent,

as shown in Fig. 3, to form a recess 7 for the reception of a tug-loop S. The ends of the ribs 3 are bent at right angles, or nearly so, to form lugs 9, which are pierced for the reception of a boltlO. The bolt is provided with a nut 11, by which the lugs may be simultaneously drawn together to cause the caps to fit firmly upon the end of the body 1. The end of the body may be rounded or squared and the interior of the caps conformable thereto, as preferred, though I regard the rounded form as preferable.

A figure 8 spring-clip 2 maybe fastened to the middle of the body 1 for attaching it to a plow or the like, the clip being secured in place by a bolt 13 at one end. The bolt can pass through its intersecting parts upon the opposite side of the body 1. In place of the spring-clip, however, a bolt passing directly through the body may be substituted.

What I claim is- The combination with the body, adjustable caps thereon provided with tug loops and brace ribs provided with apertured lugs, a figure 8 clip secured upon the body part between said lugs, a bolt passing through the lugs and through the figure 8 clip at the intersection of its parts, and a nut upon the bolt for securing the parts together and foradjusting the caps upon the body part, substantially as specified.
