J QNATHAN LUCAS, OF CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA.
TOILET-PAPER HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 548,260, dated October 22, 1895.
Application filed June 13, 1895. Serial No. 552,692. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Beitknown that I, JONATHAN LUCAS, a resident of Charleston, in the county of Charleston and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and usefnllmprovements in Toilet-Paper Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to animprovement in toilet-paper holders, the object being to provide a substantial and inexpensive holder for a package of toilet-paper which will supply the paper easily and economically and which may be readily replenished as occasion requires; and it consists in a metal case composed of two parts detachably connected together and adapted to hold a supply of toiletpaper between them, and provided with an inclining bottom adapted to support the paper and feed it forward as fast as consumption takes place.
It further consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of my improved toilet-paper holder. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the back plate in elevation. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section, and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section. Fig. 5 is a modification.
A represents a fiat back plate, preferably cast of metal, with slots 1 1 therein to render it as light as possible. The side and bottom edges are provided with flanges 2 2 and 3, respectively, and holes 4 4 are formed in the plate to receive screws or nails 5 5, whereby to fasten the plate in place against the wall or other support to which the holder is to be attached.
Bis the removable front of the holder, comprising in the main a face-plate 6, sides 7 7, bottom 8, and top 9. The sides 7 7 have the outwardly-extending flanges 10 10, adapted to slide into the grooves formed by the flanges 2 2 on the side edges of the back plate, the bottom flange 3 forming a stop upon which the removable front B rests. The bottom 8, which inclines forward, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, is so formed as a means of causing the which reaches nearly across the face plate, ,1 ust enough of the plate being left at the corners 13 13 to hold the paper in, and through this opening the paper is removed. The bottom 8 is also preferably provided with an opening 14 to receive a finger to facilitate the ready removal of the paper from the holder. The top 9 may be furnished with an overlapping flange 16, adapted to cover the upper edge of back plate A and give a finished appearance to the holder.
The holder thus constructed may be variously finished or ornamented, and in practice a package of paper such as is disclosed in Letters Patent No. 537,613, granted to me April 16, 1895, is placed in the holder, the holder being especially constructed and adapted for I this purpose. To place a package in the holder it is simply necessary to slide the front up and place a package therein and then slide it back into place, and, if desired, some means may be provided for locking the frontin place. When thus adjusted, the sheets of paper may be removed as fast as required for use, they feeding forward as fast as the sheets in front are consumed to fill their place.
In the modification shown in Fig. 5 the front opening is made a trifie smaller and slits are left at 17 17 for the withdrawal of the paper.
It is evident'that slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing Patent, is
1. In a paper holder the combination with a-pair of guides, and a stop, of a front the edges of which slide in the guides, a bottom at the lower end sloping all the way from the back to the front of the holder, said bottom and front having slots opening into each other out through which the papers containedin the holder are removed, substantially as set forth. ,f'
2. The combination with a back plate having inwardly turned flanges at its side edges whereby guides are formed, and a stop, at the In testimony whereof I have have signed lower edge, of a removable front having a this specification in the presence of two sub- [0 sloping bottom, outwardly extending flanges scribing witnesses. arranged to slide in the grooves at the side 7 5 edges of the back plate, said front having an JONATHAN LUCAS opening at the lower end out through which Witnesses; the contents of the holder is withdrawn, sub- R. HEBER SCREVEN, stantially as set forth. J. O. WOODRUFF.
