Be it known that I, ERNST RDERsTEIN, a subject of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, residing at Barmen, in the Province of Rhenish Prussia, German Empire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Detachable Dress and Corset Steels with Flexible Ends, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has for its object to provide a new and improved stay for corsets, dresses, and other articles of wearing-apparel.

The invention consists, essentially, in the combination of a detachable elastic stay comprising a springy body provided with a folding tongue and a garment having a pocket open at one end and made to inclose the stay and to partially inclose the tongue, the staysurrounding pocket portion being secured to the garment and the tongue-surrounding pocket portion being loose, so as to be capable of folding with the tongue under the main pocket portion.

The invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a front elevation of the elastic stay or rod. Fig. 2 is a front view of the pocket or envelope secured on the apparel and having a stay inserted. Fig. 3 is a crosssection along the line of: oc, Fig. 2, on an enlarged scale, in which the extended position of the stay is indicated in dotted lines and the locking position of the same in full lines.

Like parts in all the figures are indicated by like letters.

In the. accompanying drawings the letter A indicates the elastic or springy body of the stay, provided at one end portion with the folding tongue B, which is secured to the elastic or springy body through the medium of a tape a., secured by an eyelet b, as clearly shown in Fig. l. The article of Wearing-apparel to which the stayis to be applied is providedwith a pocket C, open at one end and constructed to inclose the stay and to partially inclose the tongue. of the pocket which surrounds the springy body Ais secured to the garment; but that portion of the pocket which surrounds the folding tongue B is left loose in such manner as to be capable of folding with the tongue under the main pocket portion, which is secured to the garment or article of Wearing-apparel. The pocket is sewed to the garment E by thread D, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.

The body A can be conveniently made of any elastic or springy material, and the folding tongue B can be made of any material which possesses sufficient rigidity to permit the tongue to be pushed or tucked under the main body of the pocket, as shown in Fig. 3. As before stated, that portion of the pocket C which surrounds the folding tongue B is unattached to the garment E, so that this unattached portion of the pocket,with the folding tongue B, can be tucked or folded under the main portion of the pocket.

My invention providesa novel, simple, and efficient stay, which can be removably applied to corsets orother articles of wearing-apparel to stiften the latter or impart to the same the desired form or shape.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- The combination of a detachable elastic stay comprising a springy body A provided with a folding tongue B, and a garment having a pocket C open at one end and made to inclose the stay and to partially inclose the tongue, the stay surrounding pocket portion being secured to the garment, and the tongue surrounding pocket portion being loose so as to be capable of folding with the tongue under the main pocketportion, substantially as described.
