CHARLES SOHERER, OF BROOKLYN, ASSIGNOR TO SOHEUER & BROTHER,
- OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BELT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 472,402, dated April 5, 1892.
Application filed December 19, 1891. Serial No. 415,640. (No model.)
To all whom. it may-concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES SCHEEEE, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Belt, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to ladies waist-belts; and its object is to provide a new and improved belt which is very ornamental in appearance and combines strength and durability with economy of material and labor in manufacture.
The invention consists of a belt provided with a band having longitudinal cuts therein extending the length of the band, except the end portions thereof, so as to form narrow strips, which are spread apart at their central portion and are secured to a transverse shield, the ends of the band being provided with fastenlngs.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
Figure l is a side elevation of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, with parts in section, on theline 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. l, and Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the middle part of the belt.
The improved belt is provided with a body part A, made of a single piece of material, preferably leather, and formed with two, three, or more diverging strips B, diverging from the ends toward the center, to connect at the widest spread with a shield O, rigidly fastened to the said strips on the front thereof. This shield O extends from the rear into an opening D of an ornament D, the shield also passing with the strips B over a bar E, secured to the back of the ornament D and extending vertically, as is plainly shown in Fig. 4. It will be seen that by this construction the ornament D is held in place on the shield, and at the same'time covers up the side edges of the shield C, as is plainly shown in the drawings. The ends of the body part A are provided with suitable fastening devices F and G for fastening the ends of the belt together. One of the said fastening devices G is preferably made adjustable on the end of the belt, so that the belt can be lengthened and shortened, accordingto the size of the waist.
It will be seen that in constructing this belt a narrow band orstrip of material can be used as a blank, and when provided with longitudinal cuts forms the strips B, which are spread apart to increase the width of the belt, as shown and described, without using a blank of a width corresponding to the widest part of the belt, thus saving greatly in material when manufacturing the article. If desired, the body part A can be lined with a suitable backing.
Having t-hus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As a new article of manufacture, a belt provided with a band having longitudinal cuts therein extending the length of the band, except the end portions thereof, whereby narrow strips are formed, said strips being spread apart at their central portion and secured to a transverse shield, the ends of the band being provided with fastenings, substantially as described. l
