SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 322,311, dated July 14, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FR D. A.NIOKERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Buttons, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in the construction of buttons, the object being to provide, in a button composed of a frontand of a back, improved means for securing said parts together, combined with improved means within the button for attaching the thread thereto by which the button is secured to a garment.

In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figures 1 and 2 are transverse sectional views, and Fig. 3 is a plan View, of a button constructed according to my invention. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the interior face of the back, and Fig. 5 illustrates detail parts.

In the drawings, a is the face half of the button, and a is the back half, the body of the button being constructed of two disk-shaped parts of suitable material-sucl1 as plastic substances, vegetable ivory, horn, or metal suitably formed to give to the button, when they are united together, the desirable shape.

The above-named two parts of the button (represented in the drawings by c and a) have each a coinciding central hole transversely through them, and in the face of the back a, which lies against the face part, a, or in the inner side of the latter, are formed two grooves, 00 00, Fig. 4, on opposite sides of the hole through it; or a circular recess may be made quite around the eylet-hole. An eyelet, (I,

having a longitudinal slot in its sides, as in Fig. 5, is fitted to pass through the center hole in the parts 0 and a when the latter are placed one upon the other. A thread-bar,e, of metal, is fitted into the grooves w m in the back a and extends across the hole in it.

The parts are assembled to complete the button, as shown in Fig. 3, by laying the bar e on the back a in the grooves ac; then placing the face part, c, of the button upon the latter, and then putting the slotted end of the eyelet through the parts astride of the bar e, and, finally, upsetting or flanging the lower end of 0 the eyelet against the border of the hole in the back, thereby securing the parts firmly together, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2. If desired, cement may be introduced between the parts 0 and a. Thus made, the thread-bar e, on account of its cylindrical form, provides adesirable means for securing the button to a garment, as the thread will not be cut or unduly worn by it. The flanged end of the eyelet makes a good finish on the face of the button around the border of the hole through it. e

What I claim as my invention is- In a button, the perforated front and back parts,0 a, the latter recessed near the perforation, in combination with a split or slotted eyelet passing through said front andback parts and secured thereto, and a transverse cross-bar passing through said eyelet, and having its ends inclosed between the front and back parts of the button, substantially as set forth.
