S. C. WOLPSKILL. SIDE BED PAN.
No. 547,314. Patented Oct. 1, 1895.
llniirnn SUSAN O. WOLFSKILL, OF WINTERS, CALIFORNIA.
SIDE BED-PAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters LPatent No. 547,314, dated October 1, 1895.
Application filed June 15, 1895.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Beitknown thatl, SUSAN O. WoLFsKrLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Winters, in the county of Yolo and State of California, have invented certain-new and useful Improvements in Side Bed-Pans; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to bed-pans, and especially to a side bed-pan-that is, a pan which can be used by simply turning the patient on on his side, and bringing the pan up to the' buttock of the person, the patient being able to use the same without requiring to be lifted onto the pan, as in the case of the ordinary bed-pan now in use.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the pan; and Fig. 2 is a transverse section through a portion of a bed, exhibiting a portion of the outline of a person lying thereon with the bed-pan in position for use.
Ain the drawings represents my side bedpan, which is made, preferably, rectangular in form and constructed with four vertical walls a and a bottom a, the front wall being cut away in semicircular form, as at 0. for a particular purpose, as will be presently described. The pan is provided with a handle 13, secured to or formed on the rear vertical Wall. The object of forming the front wall of the pan with the cut-out portion is that the pan can be brought up to the buttock of a patient, and the cut-outv portion will fit snugly the shape of the body at this point and allow a portion of the buttock to extend into the pan, thus avoiding the necessity of using pads or cloths. It will be observed that by the pe culiar shape and construction of my bed-pan Serial No. 552,928. (No model.)
all necessity of lifting the patient onto the pan, as in the case of bed-pans now in use, is avoided, which is a veryimportant feature of my invention.
The operation in the use of my pan is very simple and effective. The patient is turned on his side, as illustrated in the drawings, and the pan brought up to the buttock, so as to partially inclose the same, and the patient can be relieved Without requiring to be lifted.
The pan may be constructed of porcelain in one piece or of metal in one or more pieces, but preferably in one piece, as by this construction it can be more conveniently and thoroughly cleaned.
The pan is used, preferably, without a cover, and by reason of its simplicity of construction and peculiar shape can be conveniently and neatly used by the patient alone or assisted by an attendant.
What I claim as my invention is- As an important article of manufacture, an open top side bed pan comprising in its construction a receptacle having upright transverse front and rear walls, a portion of the front wall being cutaway on adownward seg mental curve so that the pan can be brought up to a patientlying on his side and the pan slightly tilted with the curved portion transversely against the buttock, and the buttock permitted to extend over the pan, and the patient enabled to use the same without requiring to be lifted thereon, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
