Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST HERMANN, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVED MANGLE OR ROLLING-PRESS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 54,543, dated May 8, 1866.
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, AUGUsT HERMANN, of the city of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Mangle; and I do hereby declare that the follow ing is an exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawing, representing a perspective view of my said invention, and forming` a part of this specification, and to the letters whereby the mostimportant parts thereof are marked.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing a mangle with a segment circular bed and corresponding cover, whereby the linen, cotton, or other cloth to be plaited may be pressed and rolled by means of a treadle and a segment circular motion of the cover, substantially as hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the annexed drawing, AB C D represent four frame-posts of the mangle framed together on horizontal base-pieces O and P.
E E represent a treadle-frame connected in front of the mangle by the foot-presser K, movable on two screws or pins, a, (one of which is only observable in the drawing,) inserted toward the rear of the mangle in theA base-posts O and I?.
F represents the bed of the man gle, which on its surface is a segment circular plane constructed from the center e, this being a point about in the middle of the treadle-'frame E, where a pin or screw is inserted. From the same point e on each side ofthe treadle-frame two radial bars, H and H', fastened above to the cover G, which also forms a segment circular curved plate described from the same center e.
M and M are two upright pieces ou the front and rear of the bed F. L represents the roller. N represents the linen, cloth, or other cloth wound around said roller. R and R represent two upright handle-pieces in front and rear ofthe cover G. H and H are constructed of metal.
This mangle or rolling-press is used in the following manner: The cloth is wound around the roller L, the cover R is lifted somewhat, and then the roller L, with its cloth N, is put between the bed F and the cover G. The footpresser G is then pressed down by the foot, while the handle R of the cover G is moved by the hand in a circular reciprocating.; motion, the circular motion bein g produced by a rotation on the center e, and the cover is shoved and pulled backward and forward until the rolling` process is completed.
It will be observed that this mangle, desi goed principally for domestic purposes, may be operated by one person, while the man gies heretofore used require two persons in their operation. f
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
.The mangle or rolling-press consisting of a segment circular bed and cover with a treadlef frame and radial bars operated by a circular reciprocating motion, substantially-*in the manner and for the purposes as herein described.
