UNITED STATES PATENT'. OFFICE.
ERNST GUNnLAoH,oE HAcKENSAoK, NEw JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN MANGLES. A
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,671, dated November 18, 1873; application filed g September `O, 1873.
Be it known that I, ERNST GUNDLACH, of Hackensack, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Mangle, of which the following is a speciiication In the accompanying drawing, Figure l repv resents a side view of my improved mangle, and
Fig. 2 a top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre- The object of my invention is to produce for family use a Simple, cheap, and at the same time powerful and eifective mangle, by which the process of mangling may be easily and rapidly attended to and the present cumbrous and complicated mangles dispensed with.
'The invention will first be fully described and then pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, A represents the table, to which the mangle is either permanently attached or rmly secured by suitable clampingscrews, which are applied at the lower end of the side standards B. The standards B are made, by preference, of cast iron, of suitable` strength to support the mangle-rollers G D. Standards B are curved forward, as indicated in Fig. 1, and carry, on projecting lugs a in Sernicircular recesses b, the shaft oi' the clothes roller D, which is placed loosely thereon, while the shaft of the upper or pressure roller C turns in a frame, E, which is pivoted to standards B. above roller D.` The upper roller Gis made of larger diameter than the lower,.both being made of castiron or other suitable material. An upward-extending lug, d, of each Standard B, is slightly inclined to the rear, and serves to support frame E on its pins or stops e, when thrown up, for taking out the lower roller D and changing thereon the clothes, linen, or other articles to be mangled. Frame E is also preferablymade of cast-iron, infork or U shape, with a central lever, F, extending `toward the person mangling, which is supplied with a handle, F', for pressing the` roller C down, or with a weight suspendedat its end for producing the necessarypressure on the lower roller D. Frame E is applied to standards B eccentrically at some distance to the rear of the shaft of roller C, so that the pressure of roller C when brought downto act on roller D is -in .proportion as the degree of eccentricity to the length of the lever and the weight applied, which may be increased or decreased according to the power desired to be exerted. The crank Gr is applied, by pin and slot, or by any of the usual methods, to the shaft of roller D, to be easily attached and detached for the purpose of putting on or taking oit' the roller D from the standards B, and adjusting the clothes thereon in the usual manner. By holding with one hand the lever of the pressure-roller, and turning the crank with the other as long as desired, the clothes are nicely and rapidly mangled. They are then taken oft' and replaced and run through the roller again, and so on till they have allpassed through the mangle.
Having thus descrlbedmy, invention, I claim y as new and desire to Secure by Letters Patent- The improved mangle for` family and other use, consisting of pressure roller C with eccentric frame E and lever F, and clothes-roller D turned by crank G and placed on standards B, which are applied to table A, substantially as and for the purpose described. E. GUNDLACH.
