Description
AN N l E R. BU S H,
Treadles".
Patented March 11, 1873.
I AM PHOTO-LITHOG/MPHIC CO. NM 0819021155 PROCESS) IINITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANNIE It. BUSH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT lN FOOT-WARMING ATTACHMENTS FOR SEWING-MACHINE TREADLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,582, dated Marrh 11, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANNIE R. BUSH, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Foot-Warmin g Attachments for Sewing-Machine Treadles; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon and being a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sewingmachine table, with myimprovement attached, closed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the attachment open.
Like letters indicate like parts in each figure.
This invention has for its object to provide a foot-warming attachment to the treadles of sewing-machines; and it consists in constructing in the treadle a chamber inthe form of a segment of a circle, provided with a cover hinged at its back edge; also in providing a warming-iron, its contour corresponding with the shape of the treadle into which it is placed, as is more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawing, A represents a treadle, consisting of a chamber in the general form of a segment of a circle, which is properly attached to the girder-rod B of a sewing-machine; this treadle is provided with a cover, 0, hinged at its rear side, and has a downwardly-turned 1ip,-a, upon its front edge, which, when the cover is closed down, will clasp over the front side of the treadle-chamber; this cover may be provided with indentations, in the general outline of a persons foot, to prevent the feet slipping from it while being in operation. I) is a warming-iron, its shape corresponding to the inside of the treadle-chamber; it is provided with a slot or opening, 1), into which the point of the handle F fits.
Having described and named the various parts of my invention, I will now proceed to explain its uses.
In many of our large manufacturing establishments, where sewing-machines are in use, the apartments are not thoroughly warm in the early part of the day, and the operators suffer considerable inconvenience from having cold feet, and the labor it takes to run the machine; these difficulties I overcome by constructing the treadle of the machine hollow, in which I place one of the warming-irons D, it having been previously heated for that purpose; the operator can now sit at the machine without having cold feet, while at the same time the heat from the treadle warms its lubricant, and thus renders the running of the machine much easier than if those parts of the machine were cold. Two of these irons D should be provided for each machine, the one being heated while the other is in use.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,--
Ahollow or box treadle for sewing-machines, provided with a receptacle for a heated iron, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
ANNIE R. BUSH.
